Bergeijk: Discover Culture and Design
Accommodation in Bergeijk
In Bergeijk, different stories of design and craftsmanship come together: Rietveld’s architecture, Mien Ruys’ landscape design, and the themes explored by local museums. These features can help you decide where to stay. They range from a transparently designed factory building to a park designed by a landscape architect and the history of tobacco processing.
Rietveld, De Ploeg, and the Cultuurhuis
The Weverij De Ploeg is a transparent factory building dating from 1958, designed by Gerrit Rietveld and distinguished by its characteristic sawtooth roofs. This roof design consists of repeated, sawtooth-shaped sections. Together with the transparent design, it makes the building’s architecture a subject in its own right. You can book a Rietveld tour at De Ploeg through the Cultuurhuis Bergeijk.
The Cultuurhuis Bergeijk is housed in the restored farmhouse section of the historic Teutenhuis on Domineestraat. As a small museum in de Kempen, it presents modern cultural heritage associated with the design icons Gerrit Rietveld and Mien Ruys. This includes the colourful fabrics of Weverij De Ploeg and the furniture designed by Martin Visser for ’t Spectrum. The themes span architecture, textile design, and furniture design.
Ploegpark and Rietveld features
Ploegpark, also known as Landschapspark Mien Ruys, was designed by garden and landscape architect Mien Ruys. It dates from the Nieuwe Bouwen period, from 1915 to 1960, and has been a Rijksmonument since 2009. Its design and historical context offer a different perspective on design than Rietveld’s factory building: here, the focus is on landscape architecture.
The Rietveld Klok, a monument, is located at the entrance to Ploegpark. Stichting Werkgemeenschappen Bergeijk gave it to De Ploeg in 1963 to mark the weaving mill’s 40th anniversary. Another Rietveld street clock is on the 13-kilometre cycling route that runs from the Teutenhuis past the Rietveld-Abri and the clock. The route thus provides a direct link between the Teutenhuis and these two Rietveld features.
The Rietveld-Abri is distinguished by transparent red and yellow glass panels and strips of clear frosted glass. Another design feature is the Glazen Paviljoen: since November 2011, this diamond-shaped glass artwork has been in Bergeijk. It is particularly striking in the evening, when it glows a mysterious blue.
Museums, art, and planning your visit
The Museum De Sigarenmaker explores the history and processing of tobacco, the former practice of making cigars by hand, and the interior of an old tobacco shop. On the stated visiting days, visits are possible by appointment by telephone only. Check the visiting information before you set out and arrange your appointment by phone.
The Bloemen- en Beeldentuin also offers something distinctive: it features striking Corten steel sculptures by artist Harry Verhoeven. Various animals live at the Kinderboerderij throughout the year, which is presented as an attraction for children. These places complement the themes of architecture, park design, and tobacco history with garden art and an animal-focused attraction.
Bergeijk is accessible by car via the A67, N397, N123, and N69. If you’re looking for a hotel in Bergeijk, you can choose your destination based on the themes that interest you most: Rietveld’s architecture, the design of Ploegpark, or the museums’ exhibits. This keeps your search focused on the location and character of your stay.
