The landscape of enclaves makes Baarle-Nassau a destination for travellers looking to combine history, art and trails on foot or by bike. If you are looking for a hotel in Baarle-Nassau, you can plan your stay around these interests: topics range from the unusual history of the border to churches and art, as well as walking and cycling routes.

A landscape of enclaves with a history of its own

The landscape of enclaves in Baarle-Nassau includes 22 Belgian enclaves; eight enclaves belonging to Baarle-Nassau lie within Baarle-Hertog. The enclave situation shared by Baarle-Nassau and Flemish Baarle-Hertog arose around 1198 when the lands of the Duke of Brabant and the Lord of Breda, the Count of Nassau, were divided. The enclave boundaries were not established as official national borders until 1995. The enclaves remained despite various attempts to abolish them. At the Bezoekerscentrum Baarle, an enclave map shows how the borders run through Baarle. This offers a concrete view of the border demarcation alongside the history of the division.

Churches, art and remembrance

High Five Art is an exhibition space and art gallery with a particular focus on textile art. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw van Bijstandkerk has been the parish church of Baarle-Nassau since 1860. Its 1932 extension has a modern, imposing appearance and forms a strong contrast with the older section. The St. Salvatorkapel, popularly also called Kapel van Nijhoven, has a prayer garden surrounded by old trees, restored Stations of the Cross and a grotto modelled on the one in Lourdes. A service is held there on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. from May to September. As the seasonal schedule may change, check before your visit.

Nearby, since 1989 the Heemhuis has served as an archive, work and exhibition space for the Heemkundekring Amalia van Solms; it was declared a monument in 1994. Walking routes also explore local history: the 5 km Miet Pauw wandeling focuses on war and resistance in Baarle and commemorates Maria Verhoeven, popularly known as Miet Pauw. At the annual liberation commemoration held by Baarle’s schools, the resistance memorial is handed over from the graduating class of one primary school to the next class.

Walks by distance and theme

The nearly 5 km Hannebroekpad leads through the countryside north of Baarle-Nassau/Hertog. The 6 km Ommetje Tommel passes historical sites; the 10 km Ommetje Broskens winds through Baarle’s gently rolling landscape and includes a constructed boardwalk or boot trail. The three Ommetjes Baarle can be started at junction 54, on the corner of Nieuwstraat and St. Janstraat in Baarle-Nassau. Route details may change, so check the information before setting out.

The distances offer a concrete comparison when planning: the Hannebroekpad is nearly 5 km long, Tommel is 6 km and Broskens is 10 km. The Miet Pauw wandeling adds another 5 km, with a focus on war and resistance. This lets you take both the distance you have in mind and the theme into account, rather than choosing a trail by name alone.

Cycling routes and cross-border experiences

The Enclaveroute is a 50 km cycling route, with a shortened 40 km option; along the way, the border is crossed more than 25 times. Vind alle 30 enclaves combines an enclave passport with five routes following numbered junctions, including four walking routes and one cycling route. Participants collect a stamp at the designated stamping points as proof that they have visited an enclave. The Dodendraadroute is an interactive recreational cycling route through Belgium and the Netherlands, including Baarle-Nassau. Along the route are 15 themed photo panels, 11 audio stories and four reconstructions. Route and participation information may change; check the details before planning your trip.

Cycling along the Bels Lijntje also brings visible traces of the past into view: several old signal boxes and Baarle’s former railway station remain along the cycle path. Schommelen op de Grens offers another cross-border experience: each swing takes visitors from Belgium to the Netherlands and back again. Enclave-tours offers e-bikes, city bikes, tandems, Solex vehicles, cruisers and scooters. If you are planning around one of these options, check in advance which vehicles are currently available.

Wine and a multi-course walking experience

Happen & Stappen: Flirten met de grens combines a 14 km walk with three courses at two restaurants. Arrangement details may change; confirm them before planning. Hof van Baarle is located in the rural area of Boschoven, on the edge of the European twin municipality of Baarle-Nassau/Hertog. The cross-border vineyard has vines on Dutch and Belgian soil; you can sample its own wines there. As the opportunity to taste the wines may vary, check in advance.
