Discover Rosmalen: History, Culture and Events
Accommodation in Rosmalen
An event at Autotron, an interest in history or art, and getting active on walking or cycling routes each lead to different areas of focus. The local themes offer practical starting points for planning your trip around the kind of stay you want.
Autotron and Libéma Open
Autotron has had a past and a present-day role: it was once a motoring theme park and is now a popular event venue, offering a range of indoor and outdoor event options. The annual international grass-court tennis tournament Libéma Open brings the world’s top players together on Autotron’s outdoor courts in Rosmalen. If you want to plan your trip around the tournament, check the event dates before booking a hotel.
If you are travelling by car, Autotron is accessible via the A59 between ’s-Hertogenbosch and Oss. Take exit 50, Kruisstraat, and then follow the signs to Autotron.
Hooge Heide: Landscape and Trails
The shared landscape history of Hooge Heide is shaped by wind-blown sand and the formation of cover-sand layers. Walking and cycling routes have been laid out across its various areas. This offers two different starting points for your plans: you can explore the landscape through its formation, while the routes offer ways to get active on foot or by bike. If you want to combine several interests, you can consider these trails as a focus in their own right alongside the cultural themes.
The History of the Mill, Church and Coudewater
The Standermolen windmill has stood in Rosmalen since 1732. At the R.K. St.-Lambertuskerk, various parts date from different periods: the west tower was built in the 15th century, and the Mariakapel on the south side of the tower around 1550. This chronology makes these two building details distinct landmarks in the area’s architectural history.
Coudewater also has a layered history. The former institution was part of the Coudewater psychiatric hospital and served as a place for patients to relax. At the same time, the origins of Maria Toevlucht Abbey in Uden lie on the site known as Coudewater in Rosmalen: the first community of the Order of Saint Bridget settled there in 1434. The historic site in Rosmalen and the abbey in Uden are not one and the same.
Art and Cultural Activities
Paintings, sculptures and photographs are regularly exhibited at PERRON-3. A different historical perspective is offered by the virtual exhibition “Rosmalen in the 1950s,” published on 5 June 2018. It features old photographs, stories about residents and interactive 3D models. In this way, an ongoing display of various art forms sits alongside a topic from local history set in a specific period.
Readings and concerts can be held at Kunsthuis Rosmalen, which is pleased to invite established speakers and musicians. Heemkundekring Rosmalen organises walks and cycling tours. These activities differ from the established routes in the various areas of Hooge Heide: they are tours organised by the association, with no regular schedule implied.
Animal Watching and Playground
Dierenwei Geitenbrij in Rosmalen has guinea pigs, ponies, goats, pigs, a peacock and other birds. The animals kept there may change. ’t Kwekkeltje has been free to visit since it opened in 1993. For families including these destinations in their travel plans, animal watching and a playground visit are two different activities.
