Smakt Between Pilgrimage and the Meuse Landscape
Smakt is a pilgrimage destination dedicated to Saint Joseph, located in the ancient, low-lying floodplain of the Meuse. The combination of a religious destination and a river landscape gives the town two clear themes for trip planning. The chapel and church represent its pilgrimage heritage, while the landscape offers further landmarks for walking and cycling tours.
Chapel, Church and Devotion to Saint Joseph
The Sint Jozefkapel in Smakt is listed as a Rijksmonument (national heritage site) under monument number 37233. The chapel contains a wooden altar with a Baroque altarpiece dating from around 1700. The present-day Sint-Jozefkerk stands beside the pilgrimage chapel. It was built in the 1970s and is associated with the Carmelite monastery.
Saint Joseph has traditionally been venerated in Smakt in three ways: as the patron of a happy life, the Christian family and a blessed death. Many pilgrims visit the small Sint-Jozefkapel around his feast day on 19 March. This date provides a specific point of reference if you would like to plan your trip around the pilgrimage tradition.
Landscape Along the Loobeek
The Loobeek flows past Smakt on its way to Vierlingsbeek. The Loobeekdal in the wider region around Smakt was once a peaty, marshy area that retained water. Boshuizerbergen, a Natura 2000 site, lies in the surrounding area. Among other plants, marsh St. John’s-wort and marsh violets grow in the wet meadows between the pastures near Smakt; their presence may vary depending on habitat conditions. The landscape thus spans everything from the present-day river course to the valley’s history and the plants of wet meadows.
Walking, Cycling and Getting There
The long-distance Pieterpad walking trail passes through Smakt and Holthees and goes by the Sint-Jozefkapel. On one section beyond Smakt, the route passes through woodland and heathland. A version of the B12 Bedevaartswandeling Oostrum-Smakt, dated 23 February 2020, is listed as 21.5 km long. If this distance is important for your plans, check the route using up-to-date route information before setting off.
For cyclists, the “Fietsroute landgoed Geijsteren” passes through Smakt. A cycling route runs through the Loobeek valley to Smakt. A distance of 0.6 km is given for a cycling route detour to the Sint Jozefkapel. Route signage may change, so check the route before setting off. The two distances refer to different routes: 0.6 km for the detour to the chapel and 21.5 km for the B12 walk.
A parish programme for 31 August 2026 named regional bus route 255 as a connection to the Sint-Jozef pilgrimage shrine from the railway stations in Vierlingsbeek, Venray and Boxmeer. Check the current timetable before travelling.
