For travelers looking for a hotel in Wanssum, the area offers several points of interest: nature and walking, water, and local remembrance. The landscape and trails give you an impression of what to expect when choosing this destination.

Nature and village scenery around Wanssum

Maaspark Ooijen-Wanssum covers 540 hectares and is considered the largest contiguous Maas nature area in Noord-Limburg. Maas dunes and forests are part of the landscape, as is the water, which is especially prominent there. Groundwater rises to the surface and flows through lakes, marshes and streams to the Maas. The park is freely accessible and offers walking and cycling routes.

Wanssum is shaped by the Groote Molenbeek and the marina, which effectively divide the village into two parts. A nature and walking area near the Meulebeek and toward the Geijsterse woods is part of the local recreational landscape. From the marina, you can reach the valley of the Groote Molenbeek, also known as the Meulebeek, with your dog in a five-minute walk.

Walking trails, cycling and getting around

The Pieterpad passes through Wanssum; the Ronde van Wanssum follows part of its route. This walking route passes through the Wanssum flood bypass, the valley of the Groote Molenbeek, an old Maas channel and the Wolterkamp valley. It runs mostly along unpaved paths and uses stepping stones and boardwalks. The trail conditions are therefore a practical consideration when planning your walk.

There are also local options for planning a cycling trip: Maaspark offers cycling routes, and bikes can be rented through a partnership between the marina and a local bike shop. Ask in advance. Wanssum also has a TOP (Toeristisch Overstap Punt). It is considered easily accessible by car and has ample parking; nearby, there are places to eat and cycling facilities, including a charging station for electric bikes.

Water and seasonal activities

Canoeists can continue as far as Wanssum harbor. A report from 2023 describes a newly established canoe landing site closer to the center. In summer, the harbor is considered a place for stand-up paddleboarding or picnicking. This means water-based activities include both canoeing to the harbor and seasonal options at the harbor itself.

Memorial sites and buildings

The “Sporen die bleven” memorial commemorates the raids in October and November 1944. The Wanssum Liberation Monument (2) is a corten steel silhouette: a watchful soldier stands on a plinth. The monument commemorates the liberation of Wanssum and the Allied soldiers who fell during it. You will find it on the east side of the Groote Molenbeek, on Meerloseweg.

The Leonardus Chapel, also called the Lindert Chapel, is a brick chapel on the edge of Wanssum, with an openwork gable peak. Inside the chapel is an altar from the former church in Wanssum, with a small depiction of Saint Leonardus. The Maria-in-de-Nood Chapel was rebuilt as a modern small concrete-column chapel from Kevelaer. Venray architect Lerou designed it; it stands at the corner of Venrayseweg and Pastoorstraat.

The Michaëlkerk also has an art-historical feature: a stained-glass window by B. Coppus of Horst was made in 1965. It depicts the sacrifice of Abraham, as well as Moses with the tablets of the Law and the golden calf. Together, the monuments and buildings offer insights into a range of subjects—from the events of 1944 and the liberation to religious depictions and chapel architecture.
