Limbricht combines medieval church art and a castle complex with nature in Limbrichterbos, as well as walking and cycling routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Limbricht, you can first consider whether the castle and churches, the forest or a particular route should be the focus of your stay.

Kasteel Limbricht: Castle and Activities

Kasteel Limbricht is an early medieval motte castle surrounded by a moat. The bronze likeness of Entgen Luijten stands on the motte. On the cultural tour, you walk through the underground vaulted cellar of the main castle, dating from the 11th century; the tour also includes a visit to a small museum in the castle’s dungeon complex.

Kasteel Limbricht offers a beer tasting featuring regional beers and exotic fruit beers. Kasteelbrood and several tapenades are served with them. If you plan to include the tasting, check the latest booking details in advance.

You can book scooter tours from the castle. They take you through the estate and surrounding area and return to the castle terrace, where coffee or tea is served. For this activity too, it is advisable to check the latest booking details before making plans.

Oude Salviuskerk and Other Church Art

The Oude Salviuskerk is known for its murals: they were created around 1300, are considered the oldest ever found in a Dutch village church, and can still be viewed. The choir also features Romanesque elements, including round windows and round-arched decorations beneath the eaves.

The church also serves as a venue for concerts, guided tours and exhibitions. It is also part of Visit Zuid-Limburg’s “Route vol Verwondering Noord-lus.” Along this route, you can use the QR codes on façade signs at designated stops to access 360-degree and/or audio tours on your own smartphone.

Another piece of religious heritage is the Heilig Hartbeeld at Burgemeester Coonenplein 2. It is part of the Nieuwe Sint Salviuskerk complex.

Walking, Cycling and Limbrichterbos

Limbrichterbos is a beech forest crossed by two streams. At a quiet time of day, you can hear the tapping or drumming of woodpeckers throughout the forest, so timing makes a difference if you want to listen out for these sounds of nature.

Kasteel Limbricht provides a 9.5-kilometre walking route through Limbrichterbos that ends in the castle courtyard. A considerably longer route is the 50.0-kilometre “Route vol Verwondering Zuid-Lus” cycling route, which starts and ends at Kasteel Limbricht. For your planning, you can choose between a 9.5-kilometre walk through Limbrichterbos to the castle courtyard and a much longer cycle ride starting and finishing at Kasteel Limbricht.

The “De Heks van Limbricht” cycling route shares information about Entgen Luijten’s life through audio clips. It takes up a theme also represented by the bronze likeness on the motte and connects it with a dedicated route.

Audio Tours of Limbricht

The “Stolpersteine Limbricht, Grevenbicht, Obbicht en Einighausen” audio tour starts at Burgemeester Coonenplein in Limbricht and passes all the Stolpersteine. Another audio tour, “Heden ik, morgen gij – verhalen van Limbricht,” starts at Kasteel Limbricht. The two tours therefore differ both in their starting point and their subject. Check the tours’ digital availability before your trip.
