Born brings together a wildlife park in the gardens of a former castle, partially preserved castle ruins, a hiking route and artworks with on-site information. You can choose different focuses for your stay: wildlife and castle history, nature and exercise, or art and regional heritage.

Kasteelpark Born and the former castle grounds

Kasteelpark Born is a wildlife park in the gardens of the former Kasteel Born. The research centre “De Wasjbear” offers a special insight into the wildlife there: guided by volunteers, young visitors use microscopes to examine small aquatic animals from the park’s moats. The microscopes bring the animals in the moats into focus, while the park itself offers a different setting as a wildlife park.

Kasteelpark Born is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Opening hours may change, so check them before your visit. The park is accessible to wheelchair and rollator users, and both can be borrowed at the ticket desk. If you rely on borrowing one, it is advisable to confirm availability in advance.

Castle ruins and building history

The first mention of a medieval castle at the site of today’s ruins dates from 1150. The present-day Kasteel Born, however, was built between 1662 and 1666 as a summer residence. The two dates therefore refer to different historical points: 1150 refers to a castle at the site, while the construction dates refer to the present-day castle. Kasteel Born is partly in ruins and lies within a double moat system. The site thus brings together the early mention of a medieval castle, its later construction as a summer residence and the complex’s present-day condition.

Hiking through Rivierpark Maasvallei

The Swentibold Rollenroute Born is 10.4 kilometres long, is rated easy, and starts and finishes in Born. It passes through Rivierpark Maasvallei and the wooded Limbrichterbos nature reserve. Along the way, the route crosses the Venkebeek and reaches Lake De Rollen. Its length and difficulty rating provide concrete points of reference for planning your walk; the described stages take you through different landscapes, from woodland to a stream crossing and then a lake.

This hike is quite different from a visit to Kasteelpark: it focuses on a longer route through natural landscapes, while the castle grounds bring together a wildlife park and architectural history. In the regional context, vol Verwondering includes three cycling routes through the Grensmaasvallei, the Selfkant in Germany and Maaseik in Belgium. It brings nature, views and cultural heritage to life, adding an explicitly regional dimension to your perspective on Born.

Art and Levend-Erfgoed Days

A total of 11 artworks in Born have QR codes. Visitors and residents can use them to find out about the history behind each artwork on site. The QR codes offer their own way to explore local history: instead of focusing only on the castle ruins, you can also learn about the stories behind individual artworks.

The Levend-Erfgoed Days are held every year at Kasteelpark Born on the second weekend of September. During the event, visitors can sample cheese, yoghurt and milk from cows, sheep and goats. If you would like to combine your visit with a tasting, check the specific event dates in advance. This recurring event offers a different focus from a visit to the castle grounds or a hike: it centres on living heritage and the different dairy products.

You can choose excursions in Born according to your interests: Kasteelpark and castle history come together on the former castle grounds, the Rollenroute offers a hike of a clearly specified length, and the QR codes and Levend-Erfgoed Days add art and living heritage to the programme.
