Discover Meerssen: Basilica, architectural history and walking routes
Accommodation in Meerssen
Meerssen offers a range of reasons to visit: sacred architecture, historic buildings, a park for walks and hikes with named starting points. The weekly market and the region’s Roman past are also among the town’s points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Meerssen, these different attractions may influence your choice of destination.
Basilica and architectural history
In the centre of Meerssen is the Basilica of the Holy Sacrament and the Apostle Bartholomew (Basiliek van het Heilig Sacrament en de apostel Bartholomeus). Built of marlstone, the basilica is a three-aisled cruciform church with a distinctive crossing tower and a five-sided apse. The crossing is where the nave and transept intersect; the tower and three aisles give the architecture a clearly defined structure. The building’s materials, floor plan and apse are specific features that inform its description.
Other historic landmarks date from different centuries. The former watermill complex Oliemolen, at addresses Geuldalweg 16 and 18, originally dates from the 18th century. The synagogue in Meerssen was built between 1851 and 1853 to a design by the architect J.L. Lemmens from Beek. The monumental railway station building dates from 1853 and is complemented by a timber-framed signalman’s hut. While the Oliemolen represents an earlier period, the synagogue and railway station building date from the mid-19th century.
Park and walking routes
The historic Proosdijpark is a park for walks. A pond and centuries-old trees define its character. The park is also home to the Kerksteeg bridge folly, built partly from material taken from the former basilica tower. This building material provides a tangible link between the park and the basilica’s architectural history.
The Wijngaardwandeling Meerssen starts at P&R Station Meerssen. Another hike starts at the Markt and heads south through De Dellen and the Meerssenerbroek. With its pond and centuries-old trees, Proosdijpark is a place for walks.
Festivities and regional history
Sacramentsoctaaf Meerssen is celebrated every year around Corpus Christi, the second Thursday after Pentecost. The recurring date can help you plan your trip if you want to attend the festival.
The region’s Roman past is another topic connected with Meerssen. Historical figures introduce visitors to this history through audio stories at archaeological sites; Meerssen is included in the offering.
Market day and visitor information
Meerssen’s weekly market takes place on Thursdays and offers fresh vegetables, fruit and fish. If the market is a reason for planning your trip, Thursday is the relevant day of the week.
