Geulle: Mills, Cycle Routes and History
Accommodation in Geulle
If you’re looking for a hotel in Geulle, you can start by considering what matters most for your stay: nature, cycling and hiking trails, history or Zwembad Geulle. Geulle aan de Maas lies between the Meuse and the Julianakanaal.
Nature and trails
Geulderbos near Geulle is part of the Bunder- en Elslooërbos Natura 2000 protected area. The Bunderbos bronnenbos hiking area lies between Bunde, Kasen, Geulle and Moorveld. These offer two different ways to get your bearings: Geulderbos is notable for its inclusion in a protected area, while the four place names help you locate the Bunderbos bronnenbos hiking area.
The Langs Maas en Julianakanaal hiking route starts in Brommelen. It passes through Bunde alongside the Geul and the Julianakanaal. After crossing the canal, it goes through Voulwames and follows the Meuse towards Geulle. So although the route heads towards Geulle, it starts in Brommelen. This sequence of places shows how the route connects the Geul and the Julianakanaal with the course of the Meuse towards Geulle.
Cycling and archaeology
In Geulle aan de Maas, you can access the RivierPark Maasvallei cross-border cycle network via cycle junction 16; parking is available in the church square in Geulle aan de Maas. The Jung II bicycle and pedestrian ferry connects Geulle aan de Maas with Uikhoven in Belgium and cycle junctions 52 and 17. It operates seasonally and depends on water levels, so check the timetable before setting out. The cycle network route and parking options may also change, so it’s a good idea to check the latest information.
A point of interest on the Archeoroute is located near the ferry. The free Archeo app lets you find out about the remarkable archaeological finds discovered during excavations for the Grensmaas project. This adds a specific archaeological point of interest to the cycling and ferry connections.
History and swimming pool
Kasteel Geulle was built in 1595 by Wolter Hoen van Hoensbroeck. Before the French period, the Bovenste Molen served as the seigneurial mill of the lordship of Geulle; neighbouring farmers were required to have their grain milled there. The Onderste Molen, also known as Molen van Hulsen, was built around 1850 in Hulsen, at the foot of the plateau beside the railway. The comparison highlights two aspects of the mills’ history: the former compulsory function of the Bovenste Molen, and the construction date and location of the Onderste Molen.
Zwembad Geulle has three pools: a play pool, a competition pool and a paddling pool. The complex also includes a large sunbathing lawn with tall shade trees, play equipment for children, changing rooms and showers. A volleyball court and a kiosk with a terrace round out the facilities. If you’re planning to visit the swimming pool, check the current opening hours in advance.
