Discover Heel
Accommodation in Heel
Heel offers several perspectives on local history and the landscape: the church tower and St. Stephanuskerk stand alongside evidence of Roman times; hiking trails lead through the surrounding area and De Tuspeel, and guided dives are offered at Boschmolenplas. This lets you consider Heel as a travel destination according to your interests in culture, hiking or diving.
Buildings from different eras
The church tower in Heel dates from the 12th century and is partly built from Maas pebbles. St. Stephanuskerk contains further historical details: it has two Baroque altar retables from the 18th century and a Romanesque baptismal font from the 12th century. The time span between the baptismal font and the altar retables can be traced through these furnishings.
Kasteel van Heel also has a distinctive architectural feature: the southern part of the late medieval castle consists of a U-shaped main building with a wing attached on the southeast side. Mariakapel adds a different architectural style to the buildings. Its roof has five sides, and it also has angled buttresses. These details give the chapel a clearly recognizable exterior profile.
Roman history and hiking trails
An earlier historical layer is represented by Vicus Catualium. From around 40 AD until the 4th century AD, this lively Roman street village stood in Heel, on the important route between Tongeren and Nijmegen. Together with the later historic buildings, this creates a timeline stretching from the Roman settlement through the Middle Ages and into the following centuries.
The Grindgatenroute is a 16.8-kilometre hiking route through the landscape around Heel. It starts and ends at Cultureel Centrum Don Bosco in Heel. This gives you both the distance and a shared starting and ending point for planning. Along the route, information boards explain how the Maasplassen were formed.
The Maasplassen form a connected network of large and small lakes created by gravel extraction. They cover more than 3,000 hectares in total, much of which lies in the municipality of Maasgouw. De Tuspeel, a 28-hectare raised bog surrounded by deciduous and coniferous forest, also lies north of Heel. Several hiking trails for pedestrians run through the area. The Grindgatenroute is defined by its set distance and shared start and end point, while De Tuspeel is characterized by its bog, wooded surroundings and several trails.
