Maasgouw can be explored through a range of themes: the history of shipping, striking buildings and routes through the Maasplassen landscape. If you are planning a hotel stay, these interests can shape the focus of your trip. The Maas Binnenvaartmuseum tells the story of the development of inland shipping and Maasbracht as a town of boatmen. At the harbour, a museum harbour and a real wheelhouse stand in front of the museum, bringing the subject and a tangible object together right beside one another.

Shipping, locks and mills

The lock complex at Maasbracht also makes the importance of shipping tangible: it has a triple lock with a drop of about twelve metres and is a viewpoint for visitors. The Hompesche Molen offers a different focus. The tower mill is a national monument more than 300 years old and the tallest tower mill in Limburg. It is regularly open to visitors; check current access arrangements before your trip. There is a path at the mill suitable for mobility scooters, wheelchairs and pushchairs. If this path is important to your plans, it is advisable to confirm the access arrangements before your visit.

At the Maaseiland Museum, architectural history meets a glimpse into Stevensweert’s past. The museum is housed in the town’s former town hall, designed by the Roermond architect P. Cuypers. The models on display include Stevensweert and Walburg castles, as well as the fortifications of Stevensweert. The Maasbrachter Havendagen offer another event connected with shipping: they take place every two years on the last weekend in June. If you want to plan your trip around them, check the date of the next event.

Compare cycling routes

Cyclists can choose from routes of different lengths and with different themes. The Maasstadjestour is 44 kilometres long, leads through the Maasplassen area and passes through Thorn, Stevensweert and Maasbracht. At 55.5 kilometres, the Grensmaas cycling route is longer and runs along both banks of the Maas through Dutch and Flemish Limburg. The archaeological cycling route in Maasgouw covers 39 kilometres. At archaeological stations, the Archeo Route Limburg app lets you experience the stories behind the finds; check that the app is available and review the route conditions before setting off. This makes it easy to choose a tour by distance and theme: the Maasplassen area, the Maas route or archaeological sites.

If you prefer walking, Stevensweert has a circular route of about 1.6 kilometres through the historic fortified town. The town tour is therefore a shorter option than the cycling routes mentioned above. For riding and carriage driving, Maasgouw has a signposted network more than 45 kilometres long; check the signs on site. The 8.7-kilometre Thorn riding route passes through the countryside around the white town of Thorn. It is a good idea to check the relevant route conditions before setting off.

Heathland and the Maasplassen

Beegderheide is a nature reserve on the edge of the Maas Valley. Open heathland and dense woodland characterise the area, along with varied terrain and numerous small and large marshes. Various walking and cycling routes run through the reserve. This makes Beegderheide a destination to consider for a walk or bike ride, while its landscape offers a contrast to the historic themes of the towns.

The Molenplas, a lake in the Maasplassen area, offers a different kind of landscape. It was created in 2008 after the last traditional gravel extraction. A circular path around the lake passes viewpoints, a bird island and stepping stones through flowing water. Walking conditions can change with the water level. Galloway cattle and Konik horses help keep the landscape around the Molenplas open. The Maasplassen is the largest continuous water sports area in the Netherlands. Along with the walking, cycling and riding opportunities, this makes it a destination where you can choose how to balance buildings, tours and landscapes according to your interests.
