Explore Zuurdijk through three themes: the church, with its architectural history and art; De Zwaluw mill; and routes for pilgrims and cyclists. These themes appeal to different travel interests.

Zuurdijk Church: Architecture and Art

Zuurdijk Church is a rectangular hall church with a tower. Its exterior walls are plastered, with the exception of the tower. Inside, five masonry arches, windows in the north wall, and niches in the north and south walls have been preserved. These features point to an earlier liturgical use. The building’s form and interior features therefore offer different points of interest for a visit focused on architectural details.

The Maria Bell was cast by Herman in 1482 and is considered one of the oldest bells in De Marne. A work of art by Stanley Brouwn can be seen on the south wall of the church. The bell and artwork add other specific themes to the architectural perspective.

The church is open daily year-round from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is also used as a wedding venue. The opening hours provide a clear framework for planning your day; its use as a wedding venue is another aspect of the church’s profile.

De Zwaluw and Its Mill History

The present-day De Zwaluw mill was built in 1858 for E.W. Kamphuis to replace a predecessor erected in 1831. A fire destroyed the earlier mill on the night of August 27–28, 1858. This means there are two distinct building phases: the earlier mill and its 1858 replacement.

De Zwaluw is a combination mill: grain could be ground into flour and barley could be hulled into groats. The mill’s combined function is therefore reflected in two different processes. Together with its building history, this offers a distinct cultural history focus alongside the church.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Zuurdijk area has a 4.74-mile circular route for pilgrims, along which at least one medieval church can be visited. Check the route details before setting out. The Meester J.S. van Weerdenpad also runs around the north side of the village of Zuurdijk.

The 46-kilometer Op Hoogte Gedacht cycling route includes a work of art in the churchyard at Zuurdijk. The church is easy to reach by bicycle, and a cycling route planner is available for the journey. These are two different cycling-related features: the route with the artwork in the churchyard and access to the church itself.

The 4.74-mile circular route is around 7.6 kilometers, while the cycling route covers 46 kilometers. This makes it possible to compare the routes by mode of travel and distance: a pilgrimage walk or a longer cycling route. If you are planning a stay, the church, mill history and routes can offer different focuses for your time in Zuurdijk.
