Pieterburen offers a variety of reasons to visit: mudflat hikes on the Wadden Sea, walking and cycling routes, historic architecture and an English-style landscape garden. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around the main focus of your trip. Attractions range from a mudflat excursion to church architecture and garden design. The stated distances also help distinguish between the activities.

Churches, Garden and Windmill

St. Peter’s Church is Gothic in style; its choir is higher than the nave. An intricately carved triumphal arch separates the choir from the nave. The replacement tower was built in 1805; two adjoining rooms served as prison cells. The church therefore brings together features of its spatial layout and a specific historical use of its adjoining rooms.

Domies Toen includes a Slingertoen garden, laid out in the English landscape style in 1881. The De Vier Winden windmill dates from 1846. Together with St. Peter’s Church, these offer a variety of cultural themes: church architecture, garden design and the history of windmills.

Mudflats and Nature at the Visitor Centre

The Waddenkust Visitor Centre is housed in a school building dating from 1867. It introduces the different habitats along the Wadden coast and explores the importance of the Wadden Sea as a refuelling stop during bird migration. A wet room allows children to carry out experiments and observe plant and animal life under a microscope.

All mudflat excursions and activities start at the Waddenkust Visitor Centre. You can book various mudflat hikes with Wadlopen Pieterburen. From Pieterburen, you can reach the mudflats of the Wadden Sea directly behind the dike. The 6-kilometre Zwerftocht is considered the easiest mudflat hike. Check availability and meeting-point instructions before your trip; for the Zwerftocht, you should also check the provider’s current schedule.

Walking and Cycling Routes

The Pieterpad runs from Pieterburen on the northern Groningen coast of the Wadden Sea to the Sint-Pietersberg in southern Limburg. The route is divided into 26 stages, which average 15 to 22 kilometres in length. This allows you to plan around the stages rather than treating the entire route as a single undertaking.

The De Klutenplas cycling route starts at the Waddenkust Visitor Centre in Pieterburen. It is 12 or 36 kilometres long and passes brackish-water nature reserves, villages and dikes. Check the route details before setting off. This lets you choose between two different distances without confusing the route with one of the mudflat hikes.

The distances refer to different activities: the Zwerftocht is a 6-kilometre mudflat hike, De Klutenplas offers a 12- or 36-kilometre cycling route, and the Pieterpad stages average 15 to 22 kilometres. This comparison helps you understand the type of activity planned and its respective distance.
