Zaltbommel combines a long urban history with distinctive buildings and a variety of routes. Its themes range from trade and Hanseatic history to walks past remarkable trees and art in the town center. If you are looking for a hotel in Zaltbommel, these highlights can help you choose a destination that suits your interests.

Town History and Buildings

In the 13th century, Zaltbommel developed into an important trading town and was granted town rights. In the 15th century, the town also gained prominence as an important Hanseatic city. The harbor also served an important water-related function in the past, including the transshipment of sand and gravel.

The Maarten van Rossemhuis is a Renaissance building. Maarten van Rossem had it built between 1535 and 1540. Its facade features Renaissance decorations, including carved cherubim and classical heads. The Waterpoort offers a different architectural accent: it is a pointed-arch gateway dating from the 14th century.

The Sint-Maartenskerk is also one of Zaltbommel’s distinctive historic buildings. It is a three-aisled basilica in the Lower Rhine Late Gothic style. “Three-aisled” describes the layout of the church interior; the style designation places the architecture within the Lower Rhine Late Gothic tradition. The historic fortifications, in turn, tell the story of the town as a fortress: in the 19th century, they were converted into a park, which helped preserve them.

Trails, Art, and Town Walks

The Stadswallen of Zaltbommel can be explored on a dedicated walking and tree route that passes fourteen remarkable trees. The Gootspokenroute has a different focus: in the center, it takes you past ghost figures hanging, sitting, or lying on the gutters of about thirty houses.

A guided walk through the fortified town of Zaltbommel takes place on the first Saturday of every month from April through October inclusive. Check the date of the walk before your trip. For a longer route, consider the Struinroute Vuren–Zaltbommel: it is 42 kilometers long and can be started from the Beersteeg car park in Zaltbommel. Route details and seasonal access conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Another activity is the Fiep treasure hunt, which takes visitors through the town of Fiep Westendorp. The Kunstrondje Zaltbommel includes studios, galleries, and a museum in the Zaltbommel fortress. It takes place on the first Sunday of every month from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. If you plan to visit, check the participating venues in advance.

For regional information, Tourist Info Bommelerwaard offers route maps, brochures, and general information about the Bommelerwaard. Check the opening hours in advance if you plan to use the service. Overall, Zaltbommel offers several different themes to choose from: historic architecture, the history of the fortifications, art offerings, and routes with their own distinctive focuses.
