Nederhemert offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: Kasteel Nederhemert, historic churches, the Doornwaard river landscape, the Hamarithapad and Speeltuin Nederhemert. The themes range from architectural history to a walking route and play opportunities for children. If you are looking for a hotel in Nederhemert, you can plan your stay around the focus you prefer: would you rather explore the town’s history or follow the route through Nederhemert-Noord and Nederhemert-Zuid, or set aside time for the playground?

Castle and Historic Buildings

Kasteel Nederhemert is a restored 14th-century castle; its oldest parts date from the 13th century. The earliest structural elements therefore predate the castle’s overall dating. The Gebr. Remmerde mill is also part of the castle’s history: it belonged to the estate of Kasteel Nederhemert. The former rectory bears the name “Wielestein” on one of its pillars and was built in 1891. The castle, mill and rectory thus offer different insights into the town’s architectural and ownership history.

The church at Kerklaan 5 is the only surviving part of the medieval parish church. Its single-nave choir dates from the 16th century. Two historical points of reference should be distinguished here: the surviving part of the church and the medieval parish church to which it belonged. The earliest form of the Eilandkerk dates from the 14th century. These differing dates show that Nederhemert’s architectural history cannot be reduced to a single period.

River Landscape and Walking Route

The Doornwaard near Nederhemert is a well-preserved floodplain with ridges, dry channels and marshy former Maas river channels. These features describe different types of terrain within the floodplain: alongside the ridges and dry channels, the landscape also includes wet, former river channels. For travelers interested in the landscape, the Doornwaard offers a distinct focus alongside the historic buildings.

The Hamarithapad is a walking route through Nederhemert-Noord and Nederhemert-Zuid. In Nederhemert-Noord, it follows the Eendenkade and runs alongside the Drielsche Wetering. To reach Nederhemert-Zuid, the route crosses the Afgedamde Maas by ferry. These sections provide specific landmarks for the route and show that crossing the Maas involves a ferry ride. If you plan to walk the Hamarithapad, check the ferry timetable in advance.

Activities for Children

Speeltuin Nederhemert gives children opportunities to climb and slide. Its founding in spring 1915 adds a historical dimension to the play facilities. If you are including activities for children in your travel plans, climbing and sliding are the specific activities mentioned; the year puts the history of the Speeltuin in context. Alongside the castle, churches and walking route, a place with activities for children is another distinct reason to visit.
