Winterswijk Miste combines a varied landscape with historic farms and distinctive cultural themes. Meadows, hedgerows, woods and stream valleys shape the surroundings. There are also opportunities for hiking and cycling, the Meenkmolen, and connections to regional architectural, linguistic and geological history.

Landscape and trails

The mix of open countryside and natural areas makes the surroundings of Miste suitable for hiking and cycling. Meadows, hedgerows, woods and stream valleys give the landscape its varied character.

The Rondom Miste route starts at the renovated TOP De Twee Bruggen. Signs with blue footprints mark the route. The starting point and markers give you practical reference points for planning your trip.

The Schrieverspad is a walking trail lined with various tree species. They were selected by dialect writers or people who have contributed to the Low Saxon language. The entrance and car park are on Kotmansweg in Miste/Winterswijk; the Schrieverspad is part of Landgoed Kotmans.

The blue footprint markers are a defining feature of Rondom Miste. On the Schrieverspad, the connection between the tree species and the Low Saxon language draws attention to a different theme.

Mill, farms and local history

The Meenkmolen is a wooden smock mill and grain mill dating from 1851. It is roofed with slate and has a rotating cap; it was restored in 1961. When the mill is turning, visitors can ask the miller for a guided tour.

Almost all of the approximately 80 Saxon farmhouses dating from around 1700 still stand in Miste. Scholtenboerderij Meenk was built around 1895. At Huize Meenk, the history of the site where the house stands goes back to the Middle Ages. Boerderij Hemmink is a remnant of a very old estate, first mentioned in 1331. These details relate to different aspects: the number of farmhouses from a particular period, the construction date of Scholtenboerderij, the history of the site of Huize Meenk, and the mention of the estate.

Geology, art and a break

Landgoed Kotmans has an information centre where shells excavated there from the Miocene are on display. Alongside architectural history, this offers a geological theme: the finds provide a glimpse into the distant history of the Earth.

The Vrijheidsboom Miste was created by wood artist Daan de Leeuw in consultation with the local farming community. The work adds another cultural dimension to a visit to the area.

Het Bloemenkabinet is a good place to take a break while hiking or cycling, and offers coffee or tea with a treat.
