Winterswijk Brinkheurne: Nature and Historic Farms
Accommodation in Winterswijk Brinkheurne
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Winterswijk Brinkheurne, you can choose the area based on the interests that come together here: trails through a cultural landscape, the Boven-Slinge and its wooded banks, historic farmsteads and local memorial sites. This makes it easy to decide whether outdoor activities, regional history or an annual event is important for your trip.
Hiking, Cycling and Nature
Brinkheurne and its surroundings lie in an attractive cultural landscape, ideal for hiking, running and cycling. Het Winkel at De Slingeweg 20 in Winterswijk Brinkheurne is a starting point on the official hiking junction network; from there, you can choose from several hikes in the Achterhoek network.
For cyclists, the “Langs Scholtengoed in Ratum, Brinkheurne en Kotten” route is another option: the cycling tour is about 40 kilometres long and includes two short sections on foot. Some paths can be difficult at certain times of year; check the route conditions before setting out. Unlike the hikes starting at Het Winkel, this tour is primarily for cycling; the two short sections on foot are part of it.
Buskersbos is the wooded area around the banks of the Boven-Slinge in Brinkheurne; the river winds its way through the forest. Trees growing along its banks include medlar, bird cherry and ash. Many flowers and plants grow right beside the Boven-Slinge next to the forest. If you are lucky, you may also spot kingfishers there.
Historic Farms and Their Stories
De Oude Vlaskamp is a well-preserved Saxon farmhouse dating from the 18th century. The house features timber framing, a tiled roof and a water well. Scholten Stemerdink, also known as Staemerd, is on Stemerdinkweg in the hamlet of Brinkheurne. The Stemerdink family lived in the historic farmhouse from before 1500 until 1847.
At Scholten Hilbelink, a different aspect of history takes centre stage: the Saxon farmhouse lies near the junction of Stemerdinkweg and Horstweg, and a farmstead at this location is documented from 1531. The emphasis therefore differs: De Oude Vlaskamp is defined by its architectural features, Scholten Stemerdink by the family’s long residence, and Scholten Hilbelink by the early documented history of the farmstead.
Erve Brookert is a historic farmhouse and a Rijksmonument, built around 1850. Groups of ten or more can visit the farm by prior arrangement. If you plan to visit, make your request in advance.
Memorial Sites and Local Events
The Schoolpomp near the former primary school in Brinkheurne is a replica of the original pump, built in 2005. A walk from Winterswijk towards Brinkheurne passes it halfway along the route. Check the route conditions and current availability before setting out.
The Vrijheidsboom Brinkheurne is the hamlet’s freedom tree. It commemorates an earlier lime tree and the former communal meeting place near the school. This was a place to gather, learn and create. Together with the replica pump, the tree offers another link to local history, with its own focus on the community’s former shared life.
Volksfeest Brinkheurne is held in the hamlet every year on the penultimate full weekend in August. The exact date may vary; check the festival dates before planning your stay around it. Zalencentrum Reuselink on Slingeweg offers another activity: bowling.
