When looking for a hotel for a trip to Appeltern, you can start by planning your stay around the topics that interest you: garden ideas, local and architectural history, a working pumping station, or the Mooi Appeltern walking and nature trail. These options differ considerably. For the pumping station, the timing of your visit is also relevant, while the route offers different lengths and an alternative course.

Garden Ideas and Nature

Bloemenpark Appeltern has more than 200 show gardens where you can experience garden ideas in practice. This makes it a distinct focus for anyone who would like to explore garden ideas during their stay. Adventure Island offers a different experience: it has a natural playground where children can discover nature through play.

Architecture and Local History

Sint Servatiuskerk is a Neo-Gothic basilica with a tower. The building was designed by architect C. Franssen and constructed in 1906–1907. The church provides a specific point of interest for a cultural-historical visit. Its construction period can be clearly distinguished from the longer history of the Heerlijkheid Appeltern.

The Heerlijkheid Appeltern has been inhabited for more than 1,000 years. The oldest written record appears in a papal bull from 1134, which mentions the village and the castle. The remains of Huis Appeltern are also part of this local history: they lie within the still-intact moat of the Heerlijkheid Appeltern. Alongside the written reference from the 12th century, the physical remains and their location in the moat provide historical points of interest.

See the Pumping Station in Operation

Stoomgemaal de Tuut has been fully restored and is operational. During steam weekends, you can see the pumping station working at close quarters. During regular opening hours, the entire Stoomgemaal can be visited inside and out. These details concern different aspects of a visit: regular opening hours allow you to tour the entire pumping station, while steam weekends focus on experiencing it in operation. Check the seasonal opening hours and steam weekend dates before your visit.

Plan the Mooi Appeltern Route

When the Mooi Appeltern walking and nature trail opened in November 2018, it consisted of a 4.6 km blue route and a 5.7 km yellow route. It has since been expanded to include a 2.1 km purple loop and a 1.9 km red extension towards Bloemenpark Appeltern. The purple loop is therefore 0.2 km longer than the red extension; the options also differ in their shape and in the direction specified for the red extension.

The path along the blue section across the factory grounds has been removed because fences have been put up there. An alternative route has been provided; follow its arrows on the posts. As route conditions may change, check the current route before setting out.

Whether you are planning your stay around garden ideas, history, the pumping station in operation or a particular route length, these options give you specific points to consider when planning your trip to Appeltern.
