In Alphen, the landscape and local history offer distinct themes for a trip: the Moas-Wetteringpad and the Maas riverbank provide insights into the river and surrounding countryside; the mill, churches, former Dijkmagazijn and monument reflect technology, architectural history and remembrance. If you are looking for a hotel in Alphen, these highlights can help you decide whether the town matches your travel interests.

Landscape, Water and the Moas-Wetteringpad

The Moas-Wetteringpad runs through orchards, farmland and extensive floodplains outside Alphen aan de Maas. If you want to take in the landscape on your trip, rather than just individual buildings, this offers a specific point of interest. On the Alphen side of the weir, there is also a technical and ecological feature: the path passes a hydroelectric power station, and fish passes have been built to encourage fish migration.

The Maas riverbank at Alphen is also changing: the stone revetment was removed to a point one metre below the waterline. The work is complete, allowing natural processes to take their course again. A bank with shallow water and river beaches is gradually taking shape. The completed intervention and the riverbank landscape that is developing step by step are two distinct aspects to bear in mind when picturing the Maas riverbank.

Mill and Operations

The Tot Voordeel en Genoegen mill complex was built in 1798. The mill can regularly be seen in motion, guided tours are available, and when there is enough wind it grinds grain for demonstration purposes. This brings together architectural history and a present-day mill experience, without promising a demonstration regardless of wind conditions. The construction date provides a historical reference; the regular turning, guided tours and milling when there is enough wind describe what the mill offers.

Churches and Architectural History

The Hervormde Kerk in Alphen is a simple hall church dating from the mid-19th century. Pointed-arch windows and a wooden roof turret define its architecture. Its furnishings include a pulpit with four carved panels from the late 16th century and a two-manual organ made by H. Knipscheer around 1865. The simple building form and furnishings from different periods stand side by side in this church.

Another church building is the parish church dedicated to H. Lambertus. In its present form, it is a three-aisled, pseudo-basilican cruciform church dating from 1932; it also has a Romanesque west tower. This combination of a clearly defined present-day architectural form and an older tower gives the church a different architectural profile from the Hervormde Kerk.

The former Dijkmagazijn in Alphen is a brick building in the Waterstaatsstijl, dating from the third quarter of the 19th century. It belongs to the oldest type of Dijkmagazijn found in the Land van Maas en Waal. This classification connects the specific building with a type of architecture found in the region. It adds another aspect of Alphen’s architectural history to the churches.

Remembrance and Ferry Connections

The Martien Derks Monument is a natural-stone column topped with a helmet. It commemorates a Dutch soldier who died fighting the occupying forces during the Second World War. The column’s form and the reason for its commemoration give the monument a distinct role alongside the churches and former Dijkmagazijn: here, the focus is on remembering an individual and his fate.

The municipal ferry connections Alphen–Ooijen and Lith–Alphen are also relevant for trip planning. They are listed for the period from 1 January 2025 to 1 January 2035. If you plan to use either connection, check the timetable for your intended travel date.
