Teuge: Aviation, Churches and Architectural History
Accommodation in Teuge
Teuge combines a range of aviation activities with a rich architectural and church history. Teuge Airport is located north of the village of Teuge in the municipality of Voorst. Training flights, skydiving and gliding take place there. These topics offer different ways to plan a stay: from views on a sightseeing flight and experiences at the airfield to historic buildings in the village.
Aviation at Teuge Airport
Sightseeing flights over Teuge and its surroundings are offered from Vliegveld Teuge; operational details may vary. Visitors can also take a seat in a realistic cockpit at the airport, if the operator offers this experience. Yellow Wings offers a Boeing 737 gate-to-gate simulator experience there; provider details may change. Nationaal Paracentrum Teuge offers tandem jumps, with booking and availability subject to change. The activities have different focuses: a sightseeing flight takes you over the surrounding area, while the cockpit and simulator offer an aviation experience on the ground. Tandem jumps are another distinct activity.
The Teuge Airport Tour offers a behind-the-scenes look at aviation businesses and clubs at and around the airfield. As part of the guided tour, visitors can access areas that are not usually readily accessible to the public. A small passenger bus is used for transport around the airfield; tour dates may vary. This sets the tour apart from the flight and simulator experiences: the focus is on insights into the airfield and its aviation community.
Fliegerhorst and Local Church History
Fliegerhorst Teuge is a distinct historical point of interest. The complex was built by the German occupiers during the Second World War. It was designed to resemble a small farming village, disguising the bunkers. This combination of an apparently rural appearance and military camouflage makes the complex a distinctive part of Teuge’s history.
Several dates in church history also form part of the village’s character. Rehoboth in Teuge is a Rijksmonument, a listed national heritage site, and was built in 1907 as a meeting and Sunday school building for the Dutch Reformed Church. The former Christelijke Gereformeerde Kerk began holding services in a farmhouse in 1836. In 1851, the congregation built its own church in Teuge, which was used until 1968. These details mark different stages in local church history, from the start of services in the farmhouse to the use of the later church.
Timber Construction and a Route Through the IJssel Valley
Het Kleine Zand is a boarded barn built entirely of wood. Its thatched half-hipped roof, unique timber joints and high roof define the structure. The boarding, construction and roof shape provide specific features to look at when considering the building’s architecture, rather than simply classifying it as a barn.
If you would like to plan a walk alongside aviation and architectural history, a Klompenpad trail can be reached directly from Vliegveld Teuge. The trail leads through the IJssel Valley around Teuge. Check trail conditions before setting out. This helps distinguish the different sides of the village: the airfield brings together aviation activities and a tour, while the Klompenpad offers a route through the countryside around Teuge.
There are two different perspectives to choose from: aviation activities at the airfield and historic buildings in Teuge. The sightseeing flights, simulator and tour offer different kinds of experiences; the details of church history and the distinctive barn add local history and architecture to the mix.
