Walking trails from the Cosmas and Damian Church

Two marked walking trails begin at the Cosmas and Damian Church in Terwolde. The Tuylermarkerpad is 11 km long and starts at the church, Molenweg 2. Its blue clog symbol is displayed in both directions; you can walk the route clockwise or counterclockwise. The Woldermarkerpad is an approximately 7 km circular walking trail, also starting at the church on Molenweg. A red clog symbol marks it in both directions, and this route can also be walked clockwise or counterclockwise. A direct comparison can help you choose: the Tuylermarkerpad is longer, while the Woldermarkerpad is explicitly identified as a circular route. As markings may change when routes are diverted, check the signs before your walk.

Church history and murals

A small church dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian already stood at the site of today's Dorpskerk in the 13th century. It was converted into the present-day building around 1400 and 1540. The Dorpskerk contains murals by Ewolt van Delft dating from around 1540. The mural of Saint Cunera is described as unique in the region. Several historical periods thus come together at the same church site: the early church, later alterations, and the 16th-century paintings.

Mill, tours and Molenwinkel

The De Ooievaar grain mill was rebuilt after fires in 1893, 1973 and 2015, and is once again fully operational. Tours with a miller are available; check the visiting options before you arrive. Baking mixes are sold at the grain mill's Molenwinkel. The varieties available may vary by season.

Historic estates and technology

Landgoed Matanze is a historic estate dating from the 17th century. Its buildings and grounds include a main building, a coach house, a tea house, monumental greenhouses and a former servants' house. Landgoed Matanze and the garden house are Rijksmonumenten, meaning nationally protected monuments in the Netherlands.

The history of Gemaal Terwolde is also linked to the development of water technology: it began in 1913 with the commission to build a steam pumping station on the Bandijk in Terwolde. The mr. A.C. baron Van der Feltzgemaal has been a municipal monument for several years. Together with the historic churches and the mill, it offers another point of interest for visitors interested in architectural heritage.

Cider tasting and cycling route

The IESSEL Cider tasting room is located right by the IJssel at Bandijk 25, 7396 NB Terwolde. IESSEL Cider offers bookable tastings. These include a visit to the cider press, an explanation of how cider is made, and the chance to sample several ciders. This provides a specific activity focused on local cider production in addition to the walking trails.

For a cycling tour, the “Fietsen langs IJsselhoeven en Spiekers” route starts at the Cosmas and Damian Church in Terwolde. It runs roughly along the Terwoldse Bandijk to the northern part of Nijbroek and returns to the church via the village of Nijbroek and De Vecht. You can choose based on the type of outing you prefer: the walking trails differ in length and markings, while the described route provides guidance for this cycling tour.
