If you are looking for a hotel in Scherpenzeel, local history, landscapes and leisure activities offer different themes for your trip. The village church, historic memorial sites, walking trails, the weekly market and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool give you a range of topics to consider when planning.

Landscape and village history

The landscape of Scherpenzeel is characterised by a patchwork of small fields, hedgerows and scattered wooded areas. These distinctive features describe the landscape around the village and give it a different character from the historic buildings in the village itself.

The Grote Kerk was originally built as a village church in the 15th century. Its defining features include a tall tower and a three-aisled pseudo-basilican nave. The choir stands higher, has a five-sided apse and features side chapels. The furnishings include a pulpit with a copper lectern from the 17th century, a polychrome panel depicting the Ten Commandments, dated 1714 and set in an elaborately carved frame, and a text panel from 1656. There are also funerary monuments and gravestones dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The building and its furnishings thus reflect several centuries of local history.

Huis Scherpenzeel, also known as Huize Scherpenzeel, is an imposing castle in the village that has existed since the Middle Ages. A park and bodies of water surround the castle. Another historic building is De Koepel on Broekerpad: built in 1865, this hunting lodge served as the gamekeeper’s residence and also as a tea pavilion for the residents of Huize Scherpenzeel.

Oud Scherpenzeel preserves local stories, photographs and documents and shares them with residents and visitors. Through exhibitions, lectures and publications, the organisation keeps local history alive and accessible. Alongside the buildings, you can therefore explore Scherpenzeel’s history through personal accounts and documents.

Historic sites and memorial landscape

The Grebbelinie at Lambalgerkeerkade in Scherpenzeel is an approximately 60-kilometre-long water defence line dating from the 18th century. Its surviving features include dikes, earth forts, sluices, casemates, trenches and bunkers.

Post van Lambalgen near Scherpenzeel was fortified in 1793 as a defensive post against the French and was the scene of heavy fighting in 1940. The most important part of the post was reconstructed in 2014. These three dates mark different stages in its history: fortification, fighting and reconstruction.

Walks, trails and recreation

Scherpenzeelse Verhalen combines personal stories from people who live and work in Scherpenzeel with several walking routes through the village centre, surrounding countryside and nature around the village. The “Scherpenzeelse Verhalen” circular walk is 5.3 kilometres long, takes one hour and starts at Restaurant de Dennen. This specific route therefore has both a stated distance and a stated duration.

The Doortraproute Scherpenzeel runs between the provincial borders of Utrecht and Gelderland. The roads and paths on Landgoed Scherpenzeel are open almost everywhere; the owners support as many recreational routes as possible.

Weekly market and outdoor swimming pool

A weekly market is held every Wednesday from 08:00 to 13:00 in the car park of the Kulturhus De Breehoek on Marktstraat. It offers fresh vegetables, regional products, flowers and handicrafts. Its regular schedule and the goods on offer make the market a destination in its own right, alongside the themes of architectural history and trails.

Zwembad ’t Willaer is a heated outdoor swimming pool in Scherpenzeel; swimming is seasonal. Facilities include a 50-metre competition pool and a low and a high diving board. The market and swimming pool thus complement the local history and trails with two more distinct interests for visitors.
