Scherpenzeel: Estate, village stories and green trails

The grounds of Landgoed Scherpenzeel are accessible to the public on paths and trails almost everywhere. Tree-lined avenues, small enclosed plots, sheepfolds and hedgerows shape this cultural landscape.

Estate, landscape and walking trails

Scherpenzeel is characterised by a small-scale, enclosed field landscape with small farm plots, hedgerows and scattered woodland. Historic farmhouses on the estate can usually be recognised by their blue-and-white shutters. The signposted Oudenhorsterpad walking trail crosses the estate. You can walk and picnic in the park at Huis Scherpenzeel. Another short loop is the “Scherpenzeelse Verhalen” route: 3.6 kilometres long, it passes through and around Scherpenzeel and explores stories about the village and its green surroundings.

Castle, monuments and local history

Huize Scherpenzeel is first mentioned as a castle in the mid-14th century. The entire estate of Huis Scherpenzeel has been designated a protected Rijksmonument since 2000. Listed farmhouses and old trees can also be found on the outskirts of Scherpenzeel. The protected estate therefore offers a view of individual historic features in the surrounding countryside.

The Grebbelinie offers another historical perspective. Built in the 18th century, this waterline lies on the border between Gelderland and Utrecht. From 1939 to 1940, it formed part of the Netherlands’ main line of defence under the name Valleistelling. Oud Scherpenzeel preserves local stories, photographs and documents and shares them with residents and visitors. These include exhibitions, lectures and publications on local history.

At the Oud Scherpenzeel documentation centre, visitors can view a photo exhibition, historic photo albums and a genealogy room; more than a thousand old objects are also on display. The Oud Scherpenzeel association holds four open days every year. Check the dates before your visit.

Explore on foot, by bike and by canoe

TOP Scherpenzeel, at Nieuwstraat 76, has a canoe landing and a car park. A canoe trip along the Grebbelinie can start there and passes Liniedijk and Post van Lambalgen. The northern section is 2 kilometres there and back. For cyclists, the “Rondje Vallei en Heuvelrug vanuit Scherpenzeel” route follows the junctions of the Dutch cycle network, marked with white-and-green signs. This provides different route information for navigating on the water and by bike.

Leisure and events

The KidsCross Bikepark was designed for children aged 4 to 12 and is free to access from sunrise to sunset. The ’t Willaer swimming pool has a 42-metre slide, a paddling pool for toddlers and an adjoining playground.

The weekly market is held every Wednesday from 08:00 to 13:00 in the car park of Kulturhus De Breehoek on Marktstraat. Every year, on the last Wednesday in May, it becomes a festive market with extra stalls, music and evening opening until 21:00. Check the latest market dates and programme details before travelling. On Koningsdag, celebrations traditionally begin with an aubade in the park at Huis Scherpenzeel; the rest of the programme varies from year to year.
