In Hemmen, you can consider history, landscape and routes together when choosing your stay. Huis Hemmen, the ruins and the park are at the heart of its history; hiking trails, a cycling route and classical concerts round out the picture. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hemmen, it’s worth considering which of these themes will shape your itinerary: architectural history, nature and culture, or exploring on foot and by bike.

Huis Hemmen, the Park and the Estate

In 1757, the stately country house “Huis Hemmen” was built on the old foundations of the castle that once stood there. At the ruins of Huis Hemmen, architectural remains found on site are displayed in a museum where possible. The historic estate complex also includes De Zwarte Poort, a stone arched bridge with a gate. Over the centuries, 17 lords of Hemmen ruled over the Hoge Heerlijkheid. Individual buildings and excavated remains thus offer different perspectives on Hemmen’s past, alongside its long history of rule.

The park also has its own place in time: according to current understanding, it was redesigned in the landscape style in the early 19th century, around 1820, and enhanced with several ponds. The water features in the English landscape garden and the ditches around the ruins of Huis Hemmen are connected to the River Linge. The country house can be distinguished chronologically from the later park design: the house was built in 1757, while the redesign is dated to around 1820 and remains a current assumption.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Route

When choosing a hike, you can compare the distances and routes. CNME Hemmen has developed two hiking trails, each about 5 kilometres long. The 7-kilometre “Parel van de Betuwe” route passes through Landgoed Hemmen and the village of Hemmen, starting at the entrance to Kasteeltuin Hemmen. This gives you a choice of two trails of around 5 kilometres and a longer route that takes in both the estate and the village.

For a hike with an expert guide, CNME Hemmen offers guided tours of the estate. This is another way to plan your hike, alongside choosing by distance and route.

A 20-kilometre cycling route from Hemmen passes through the village and surrounding area. The accompanying brochure covers nature and culture and highlights scenic features of interest. The distances also offer a useful comparison: around 5 or 7 kilometres on foot, and 20 kilometres by bike. The mode of travel and the route itself remain separate factors to consider.

Fruit Trees and Concerts

Landgoed Heerlijkheid Hemmen is home to 600 standard fruit trees, mostly old varieties of apple and pear. These include Notarisappel and Groninger Kroon. The standard fruit trees are a defining feature of the estate’s landscape.

Culture also has a recurring musical presence: several classical concerts are held each year at Hervormde Kerk Hemmen. If a concert is important to your trip, check the dates for your planned stay.

Getting to the “Parel van de Betuwe” Route

If you’re travelling by train from Tiel or Arnhem, allow for an additional 2.2-kilometre round trip from Hemmen-Dodewaard station to reach the route. Check the latest connections before you travel.
