Randwijk offers visitors plenty to explore, from hiking and river landscapes to history. The surrounding area of Randwijk and Heteren on the Nederrijn is characterized by orchards, tree nurseries and brickworks, as well as views of ridges formed during the penultimate ice age. Local highlights include the Rondje Randwijk walking route, the Randwijkse Buitenpolder and historical traces such as the former De Nijburg Castle. If you are looking for a hotel in Randwijk, these highlights may help you decide where to stay.

Hiking and the Randwijkse Buitenpolder

The Rondje Randwijk is 4.7 kilometers long. A 0.4-kilometer walk is also recommended at the site where De Nijburg Castle once stood. A partly paved footpath runs below the castle moat and above the rampart. This gives you a choice between a longer hike and a short walk at a historic site.

The Randwijkse Buitenpolder offers opportunities for hiking, swimming, fishing and boating. Facilities include a beach, walking trails and a visitors’ harbor. There is also a fishing pier, a steel bird-watching hide and a picnic area. The options range from walking and water activities to spending time at the picnic area. When planning your visit, you can choose whether hiking, water activities or nature watching is your priority.

Birds and river landscape

From Veerweg and Randwijkse Rijndijk, binoculars offer good opportunities to watch meadow birds and migratory birds that spend the winter in the floodplain. Birdwatching here therefore includes both meadow birds and migratory birds that overwinter in the floodplain. These viewing spots and bird groups offer another perspective on the landscape alongside the walking trails and facilities of the Buitenpolder.

Historical traces in Randwijk

De Nijburg, also known as Nyenborch, was a 14th-century castle in the Randwijk/Heteren area. The former castle site is also the starting point for the recommended walk. Another historic landmark is the Hervormde Kerk in Randwijk: it is a listed national heritage site (Rijksmonument) and is mentioned in documents dating from 1395. Architecturally, it is a single-nave village church with a late Gothic choir closed on three sides.

The old river course is also still visible in the floodplain beside Randwijk: as the Laaksloot, a ditch lined with pollarded willows. The Romans and Batavians used the remnant of the old river course as a natural harbor. The visible landscape feature and its historical use are thus closely connected.

A nearby museum about the history of brickmaking

In Heteren, near Randwijk, the Gelders Smalspoor Museum is located at Steenbakkerij Randwijk. Guided tours tell the story of the Dutch brick industry. The museum also offers rides on a narrow-gauge railway along a reconstructed route through a nature-rich floodplain where clay was once extracted. The tours and train rides offer two different ways to explore: the history of the brick industry and a journey through a landscape connected with historic clay extraction.
