A stay in Westendorp can focus on hiking, nature watching and cycling. Plans can include the “Rondje Westendorp” circular walk, four trails at the marked starting point of the hiking trail network, and a short, signposted cycling route. Another reason to visit is the annual Westendorp Blues Night.

Hiking in and around Westendorp

The starting point of the hiking trail network is marked by a red information panel at Doetinchemseweg 175. From there, you can choose from four walking trails through the area surrounding the village. The trails follow sandy paths and woodland tracks, run along streams and hedgerows, and pass between meadows and fields. The route scenery therefore includes both wooded sections and open landscapes and waterways.

The “Rondje Westendorp” circular walk starts in the village and goes through the “Tandem” estate, then along Buulsdijk and Smoddedijk towards the new Hoenderbosch nature area. While the hiking trail network offers four trails to choose from, this circular walk follows a specific route with named sections. The direction towards Hoenderbosch is part of the route description: via Tandem, Buulsdijk and Smoddedijk, the route continues towards the nature area.

Nature destinations nearby

Near Westendorp, to the east in the direction of Varsseveld, lies the Tandem estate with its distinctive beech avenue leading to Huis Tandem. The avenue was planted in 1900. The year gives this landscape feature a clear historical reference point.

The Slingebeek, which flows through the Noorderbroek woodland, shapes the area. There is a good chance of spotting roe deer there. The extensive Slangenburg woodland offers a different nature experience: it borders the village and contains a wildlife park. The descriptions of the two areas therefore differ in specific ways: Noorderbroek is known for its stream and possible roe deer sightings, while Slangenburg is known for its bordering woodland and wildlife park.

Cycling and the Blues Night

For cyclists, the short, signposted “Stap op Stap af” cycling route passes through the area around Varsseveld, Westendorp and Sinderen. It differs from the walking trails both in the mode of transport and in that its route includes three towns. If you are planning your trip around cycling, this named route provides clear directions and connects several places.

The Westendorp Blues Night is an annual blues event at De Vos Eten & Drinken. If you would like to include the event in your trip, check the dates for that year’s edition before making plans.

Getting to Westendorp

Westendorp has a bus connection. You can travel by train via Varsseveld and Terborg. The two towns are five and six kilometres from the village centre, respectively, making Varsseveld the nearer of the two. For travel planning, the options differ in mode of transport and distance from the village centre; check the relevant connections for your travel dates. If you are looking for a hotel in Westendorp, it may be helpful to take these travel options into account when planning your trip.
