Breedenbroek: Gardens, Walking Routes and Nature
Accommodation in Breedenbroek
Breedenbroek offers visitors several specific points of interest: the ’t Meihuus landscape garden, walking routes and a nature area, as well as a historic church and local fair traditions. This mix helps you assess the town as a destination based on your interests. Garden visits, walking and local history offer different focuses for planning.
Visit the ’t Meihuus landscape garden
The ’t Meihuus landscape garden covers 1.5 hectares and lies around a restored 18th-century farmhouse. Its areas include a wildflower meadow with a frog pond, an ornamental garden with a pond and flower beds, a fragrant rose garden, a vegetable garden and an orchard, as well as a shrub garden with many unusual varieties. The garden therefore ranges from wildflowers and ponds to landscaped plantings, vegetables, fruit and different shrubs. It offers garden enthusiasts several clearly distinct themes rather than focusing on just one planting.
In addition to the open garden days, visits can also be arranged on other days by appointment, for groups of at least 15 people. This distinction is important when planning a visit: a visit outside the open garden days requires an appointment and the specified group size.
Walking routes and nature around Breedenbroek
Rondje Hoonhorst is a 2.58-kilometre walking route in Breedenbroek. It runs east of the town through the surrounding countryside and near the Anholtse Broek nature area, also known as Breedenbroekse Bos. The Anholtsebroek around Breedenbroek has many different sandy paths; you can spot plenty of wildlife in the area. This gives you two distinct points of reference for planning: a route with a specific stated length and the natural features of a larger area.
The Groot Breedenbroek circular route is marked with orange waymarks. It offers numerous woodland and church paths for walking, as well as views across the farmland and diverse flora and fauna. The routes therefore differ in the features you can use to guide your choice: for Rondje Hoonhorst, the length and eastern location are specified; for the Groot Breedenbroek circular route, the waymarking, path types and landscape views are highlighted.
Church and local fair traditions
The Sint-Petrus en Pauluskerk in Breedenbroek is a so-called Waterstaatskerk and was built in 1854–1855. Its classification and construction dates give the town a specific architectural landmark. The Gilde St. Paulus organises an annual fair for the residents of Breedenbroek and the surrounding area. Members can take part upon presentation of their card in the bird shooting (men), fladder shooting (women and men) and bird clubbing (women). In autumn, the Gilde also holds a knoll fair.
If you are considering Breedenbroek as a destination, these themes can be considered separately: garden visits take place on the open garden days or by arrangement for groups of at least 15 people; for the walking routes, their length, waymarking and scenery offer different points of reference. The church and fair complement nature and gardens with architectural history and local traditions.
