Vierhouten combines woodland scenery with hiking trails and a rich cultural history. If you are planning a hotel stay, the area’s different attractions can help you plan your trip: forests and outdoor activities sit alongside memorial sites, archaeological traces and seasonal cuisine.

Forest, Heathland and Trails

Vierhouterbos is a quieter forest with abundant wildlife. Boswachterij Nunspeet stretches around Vierhouten. Most of the forest area is accessible year-round; parts of Noorderheide and Vierhouterbos are closed at certain times. Check the notices at the entrances before your visit.

The Verscholen Dorp hiking route through the Veluwe passes heathland and special places such as Het Verscholen Dorp. The Bergeltroute is part of the Wandelnetwerk Veluwe; the Vierhouterbos car park is listed as a starting point. Hiking, horse riding, cycling, mountain biking and cross-country skiing are possible in and around Vierhouten. IVN Noordwest-Veluwe has laid out a walk along the stream west of Vierhouten.

Memorial Sites and Cultural History

Het Verscholen Dorp near Vierhouten was a place of refuge. Three reconstructed huts stand at the site; an information board tells the story of the village in the forest. The memorial stones at Het Verscholen Dorp are made of black marble. They are located where occupying forces shot and buried eight Jews.

The memorial site on Tongerenseweg lies in the forests near Vierhouten and Nunspeet. It is about five kilometres on foot from the Zandenbos Visitor Centre. By bicycle, access is via Pas Op-Weg or a cycle path from Vierhouten; by car, it can only be reached from the Vierhouten side. These different access routes should be taken into account when planning a visit.

The De Paasheuvel complex in Vierhouten is a monument to Dutch social democracy and is of national cultural-historical significance. An amphitheatre was built at De Paasheuvel in 1937 to a design by landscape architect G. Bleeker. The war memorial there consists of a bronze memorial column and a bronze bell. The column bears the names of more than 400 AJC members who lost their lives during the war.

Gardens, Art and Seasonal Highlights

The Vierhouter Bosch archaeological site includes eight burial mounds dating from the Neolithic and/or Bronze Age. The Heemtuin Heimanshof also has a character of its own: it is one of the oldest heemtuinen in the Netherlands. All the plants that grow naturally on the Veluwe are collected there. The two circular walks each take 15 minutes; one is wider and suitable for pushchairs.

At least thirteen wooden artworks can be seen in and around Vierhouten. An expedition takes you through the village past the wooden artworks. The VVV Informatiepunt Vierhouten is located in Dorpshuis Horsterhoek and offers souvenirs, cycling routes, hiking maps and tips for activities.

The time of year can also play a part in your plans: various culinary events take place in Vierhouten, particularly during the game season. You can tailor your stay to the themes that interest you most—from forest trails and garden walks to memorial sites and cultural history.
