Gorssel: Local History and Heathland Trails
Accommodation in Gorssel
Local history and landscape shape the different sides of Gorssel. The Protestant church and Tramstation Gorssel bring building and transport history to the fore; Gorsselse Heide offers its own focus on nature and walking. The Openluchttheater adds an open-air performance venue to the cultural picture.
Church and transport history
The tower of Gorssel’s Protestant church probably dates from the 15th century. It contains a bell cast by G. van Wou in 1498. The church thus brings together a building history dated only approximately and an object with a precise date.
From 1926 until the bridge over the Twentekanaal was destroyed in 1945, Tramstation Gorssel was a station on the tram line from Deventer via Zutphen to Emmerich. The building was restored in 2010 and 2011; today, it serves as the headquarters of the Historical Association De Elf Marken. Its history can be divided into two periods: its former function on the tram line and its current use as the association’s headquarters.
Open-air theater in the town center
Openluchttheater Gorssel is in the town center, at the corner of Molenweg and Esdoornlaan. During renovations in 2013, the grounds were transformed into a public park and a small open-air theater with about 100 seats. Both the park and the theater are part of the site. An announcement dated March 25, 2026, stated that admission to performances was free. Check the current program and dates before your visit.
Wet heathland and walking trails
Gorsselse Heide is a 120-hectare wet heathland area and one of the few wet heathland areas in the Netherlands. Species found there include sundew, marsh gentian, yellowhammer, viviparous lizard, and great crested newt. The mix of species can vary seasonally, so which species you may encounter can change with the time of year. The area’s size and rare habitat type define the heathland as a natural area, while the species list names specific plants and animals.
An 8.3 km walk across Gorsselse Heide leads through heathland, woods, and surrounding fields. The Drie Kieftenroute passes through the center of Gorssel, alongside heathland, and through extensive woods. The two options differ in both their stated distances and their routes: one walk gives a specific distance, while the other explicitly passes through the town center. Before setting out, check that the walk is currently available and confirm the route.
Travel information
A ferry service announcement stated that the Gorssel–Wilp ferry was suspended from July 15, 2026, due to the low water level of the IJssel; no date for resuming service was known at the time. Check the current ferry status before traveling.
