Wissel can be explored through three specific themes: prehistoric burial mounds, the nearby Wisselse Veen and traces of former mills. This combination helps you consider the village not only as a place to stay, but also in terms of your interests during your time there. If you are looking for a hotel in Wissel, you can choose the location based on whether you are more interested in archaeological history, the landscape or former milling activity.

A prehistoric monument on Koeweg

National Monument 45342 is located on Koeweg in Wissel and comprises three burial mounds with a 10-metre protective zone. It is dated to the Late Neolithic and/or the Bronze Age. The three mounds and the protective zone define the monument clearly; the dating places it in a prehistoric period. For travellers interested in archaeology, this combination offers a specific addition to choosing where to stay. Its location on Koeweg also firmly situates this landmark in Wissel.

Wisselse Veen: nature restoration and a waterscape

Wisselse Veen is in the vicinity of Wissel; part of the area is designated as a Natura 2000 site. The Veen is an area for nature restoration, with wet, nutrient-poor grasslands. The landscape on the slope of the Veluwe also includes pools, seepage streams and ditches. The natural environment therefore encompasses both a protected-area designation and a variety of landscape features and waterways. This offers a different focus for choosing where to stay than the national monument: here, nature restoration and a wet landscape take centre stage.

Walk through Wissel and across the Enk

The Eper Beken Route is about 21 kilometres long and passes through the hamlet of Wissel. It crosses the higher-lying Wisselse Enk; on the section through Wissel, it crosses the Tongerensebeek. Two types of information can help you plan your walk: the approximate distance gives you a sense of the overall length, while the hamlet, Enk and stream identify specific places along the route. This lets you take both the distance and the local and landscape features into account when planning. As the local route may change, check the route before your walk. A walking trail leads through the woods to Wissel.

Mills as traces of the village’s history

The Wisselse Korenmolen is documented as early as 1553. Its building was demolished in the 1970s, and the waterfall was transformed into a cascade. The Eper Beken Route passes the former site of the mill, linking the historic location with the route. Three paper mills once stood on what is now Korte Blekersweg. The milling history of Wissel therefore includes both the former grain mill and the paper mills on the present-day road. The dates answer two different questions: 1553 shows that the mill was already in existence; the 1970s mark the later demolition of its building.
