Oene can be explored through several specific themes: the Klompenmakerspad runs through the agricultural surroundings, while Korenmolen Werklust, the Hervormde Kerk Oene, a war memorial and the Cultuur Historisch Museum Oene each highlight different aspects of local history. This gives you two main areas of interest to consider when planning your trip: walking and landscape on the one hand, and architectural and commemorative history on the other. The details can help you decide what to focus on during your stay in Oene.

Walking in the Agricultural Surroundings

The Klompenmakerspad is a walking trail through the agricultural surroundings of Oene. In the Oener Broek, it offers wide-ranging views; it also runs along old sandy tracks. Through the Oenerbroek, the route follows the Stroombreed. This means the trail focuses not only on the open landscape, but also on the terrain and its named route.

Korenmolen Werklust: Structure and Visiting Hours

Korenmolen Werklust is an octagonal wooden gallery Dutch windmill with a thatched roof, built in 1858. Its sails span 23 metres. Its design, timber and thatched roof describe the construction, while the year it was built and the span provide two further points of reference: its historical context and the size of the sails. These specific features make it possible to identify the mill, rather than simply refer to it as a mill.

The mill is open on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00; on other days, it is open when the sails are turning. Opening hours may change, so it is advisable to check the information before visiting. The mill shop sells its own freshly milled pancake flour as well as other types of flour.

Church Architecture and Paintings

The Hervormde Kerk Oene is originally a Romanesque village church with a single-nave longitudinal body and a plain tuff-stone tower. The single-nave body describes the layout of the church; the tuff-stone tower is another specific architectural feature. The church contains wall and vault paintings, some of which were uncovered during the restoration from 1959 to 1962. The date refers to the restoration and the uncovering of the paintings, not to the year the church was built. The architecture and paintings offer two different perspectives on the building.

War Memorial and Museum

The war memorial in Oene commemorates fifteen residents who were killed in the bombing on 22 March 1945. The war memorial in Oene at Bartjesbrug also commemorates the crew of a British Lancaster Mk I. The aircraft crashed on 22 June 1944 in the Oenerbroek, near Bartjesbrug, over the Stroombreed. The memorial at Bartjesbrug is a natural-stone boulder with a brass commemorative plaque; a bench stands beside it. The two commemorations relate to different events and dates: the bombing in March 1945 and the aircraft crash in June 1944.

The Cultuur Historisch Museum Oene has permanent exhibitions about Oene during the war. These include the aircraft crash in June 1944 and the bombing in March 1945. The Zuivelfabriek “De Hoop” and the topic of hygiene are also covered. This combination of themes broadens the view of local history beyond the two wartime events.
