Discover Ederveen
Accommodation in Ederveen
Ederveen combines local history with nature and agriculture. This offers a range of themes to consider when planning a trip: remembrance and architectural history sit alongside opportunities for walking, a self-guided cycling route and a seasonal pumpkin offering. Depending on when you visit and what interests you, the historical connections, outdoor activities or seasonal offering may be the deciding factor.
Remembrance and local history
The “Centraal Monument” in Ederveen (municipality of Ede) commemorates the village’s liberation on 24 April 1945 by the 49th British Infantry Division, also known as the “Polar Bear Division.” It consists of three grey blocks. The role of the dates is important: 24 April 1945 marks the historical event; 1995 is the year the monument was unveiled. Fifty years passed between the liberation and the unveiling. The division’s full name and nickname make the military context of the commemoration explicit.
The Hervormde Kerk at Hoofdweg 85 is a PKN Hervormde congregation and also a municipal monument. Religious affiliation and monument status describe two different characteristics of this place: PKN Hervormde refers to the congregation, while municipal monument describes its protected status. Kasteel Bruynhorst has its own historical connection: it was built in 1879 on the site of an older castle. The construction date refers to Kasteel Bruynhorst, while the older castle marks the site’s earlier history. These places therefore highlight different aspects: the church’s religious affiliation and monument status, and Kasteel Bruynhorst’s construction date and earlier castle site.
Nature and activities
Ederveen’s attractive natural surroundings are also part of its appeal, and the area offers plenty of opportunities for walking. For cycling, the “Smaakfietsroute: van kaas tot sap” (“Taste Cycling Route: from cheese to juice”) is a specifically named option. The route passes through Ederveen and the stream landscape above the village; you can cycle it independently. Walking and cycling offer different experiences: walking highlights the broad range of options in the area, while the cycling tour follows a specific route with a stated course. You can choose between walking and a self-guided cycling tour depending on how you would like to get around.
A seasonal highlight
One clearly defined seasonal highlight is Pompoenenboerderij Ederveen. Every year, from August to November, the De Jong family’s farm becomes a pumpkin farm. A wide variety of pumpkins and gourds are grown there professionally, and visitors can choose their own. The farm’s agricultural focus therefore has two sides: the variety of produce and the chance to select it yourself on site. Unlike the historic sites, this offering follows a recurring season. So if you are visiting for pumpkins and gourds, August to November is the key period to bear in mind.
