Groessen: Hotels, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Groessen
Groessen can be explored through two themes: trails through the Rhine river landscape and the architectural history of the village. Kandiapad and Husloapad offer different landscape highlights; the windmill, church and former manor houses add to the area’s historic sights. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would like to focus on hiking, explore the different building phases, or combine both interests.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Kandiapad is a hiking trail through the Rhine river landscape near Groessen. The route follows dikes, passes through the riverbank landscape, along church paths and through floodplains. It begins with a loop through JezuĂŻetenwaai, where cattle and Konik horses graze.
Husloapad leads through the rural area around Groessen, with meadows, farmland and nature. The surrounding area is also characterized by meadows, orchards and old farmhouses. The trail descriptions focus on different features: Kandiapad is shaped by the river landscape, dikes, floodplains and church paths; Husloapad focuses on rural nature, meadows and farmland.
Church and Architectural History
The church’s history spans several building phases. After Duiven became an independent parish in 1131, the church of Groessen was relocated to the site where a tower and a small Romanesque church were built around 1150/1180. Around 1500, a Gothic church was added to the existing tower; its westernmost section has been preserved. The year 1131 marks the independence of Duiven’s parish, not the construction of the church in Groessen. The relocation took place afterward; the tower and small Romanesque church were built at a later date, around 1150/1180. The Gothic structure was added around 1500 and connected to the existing tower. The preserved westernmost section therefore belongs to the later phase of the church’s history.
The De Welvaart windmill also offers a specific insight into the area’s architectural styles: it is a round, brick tower windmill with a gallery.
