Eck en Wiel: Village Church, Manor Houses and River Landscape
Accommodation in Eck en Wiel
Eck en Wiel developed in the Middle Ages on a river ridge along the Nederrijn. The history of the village includes very different buildings: a Late Gothic village church, a 19th-century manor house and farm complexes with their own links to earlier buildings. At the same time, floodplains, orchards and old paths shape the river landscape. When planning your stay, you can choose between architectural history and walking in the countryside.
Church Architecture and Historic Buildings
The Hervormde kerk is a Late Gothic village church. Its three-aisled pseudo-basilica nave and three-sided chancel describe the structure of the building. The tower forms a distinct architectural contrast: it is a simple Early Gothic structure with a short, recessed spire. If you are interested in historic architectural styles, you will find two different periods brought together in one church building.
The other buildings also tell of different periods of construction. Huis Vredestein is a rendered manor house set in an attractive garden and dates from the second quarter of the 19th century. The listed farm complex at Rijnbandijk 5 was built in 1841 on the site of the former Huis te Wiel. At Veerweg 3, on the corner with Rijnbandijk, stands an early 19th-century farm with a T-shaped floor plan.
The Veerhuis near Rijnbandijk may contain a 16th-century core, but most of the building dates from the 18th century. The Veerhuis also contains a fireplace panel with a painting and the year 1680. These details point to different periods: possible older fabric, a predominantly later construction date and a specifically dated work of art.
Walking along the Nederrijn
The Mauderick en Wielepad is a 14-kilometre walking route. You can start at Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel at Veerweg 5. The route passes the Nederrijn floodplains and old Eck en Wiel, following old paths through a historic river landscape shaped by fruit and tree cultivation. The route length gives you a specific point of reference when planning a walk during your stay.
Nearby natural areas include the Mauriksche Waarden and the Ecksche Waarden. Both are protected Natura 2000 nature areas, mostly consisting of extensively managed grassland and a few ponds. The floodplain landscape along the walking route and these nearby protected areas offer different points of interest if you are interested in river landscapes and nature.
Estate and Ferry Service
Heerlijkheid Eck en Wiel is an estate of more than seven hectares on the edge of the village, with bodies of water and orchards. The area's history also stretches back a long way: in 1288, the Duke of Guelders elevated it to a heerlijkheid. The restaurant and Proeverij at the Heerlijkheid prepare fresh dishes using traditional methods; arrangements for high tea and an extensive buffet are also available. As offerings may change, check before your trip.
The ferry service between Eck en Wiel and Amerongen has been running for more than 200 years; Regina Fluminum II has been in service since 2009. If you plan to include the crossing in your itinerary, check the timetable in advance. This lets you account for the crossing as a separate part of your travel plans, without confusing it with the walking route or nearby nature areas.
