Buren: Local history, gardens and walking routes
Accommodation in Buren
Local history, walking routes and garden landscapes offer different starting points for planning your trip to Buren. Buren Synagogue is in the oldest part of the town, and Plantsoen park was created on the former castle grounds. The orchards around Buren change in appearance with the seasons. The “Radiant” garden and De Toeren standard orchard each offer their own focus. Depending on whether you are interested in historic sites, a walk with a specified distance, or fruit growing and gardens, your stay can take different themes.
Historic sites and culture in Buren
Buren Synagogue is located on Kniphoek, in the oldest part of the town. It is part of the “Muurhuizen”—houses built against the town wall—and serves as a cultural venue. Events include exhibitions, lectures, craft demonstrations and workshops. Visitors are welcome on exhibition days. If you are planning a visit, check the exhibition days.
Sint Lambertuskerk is associated with a precisely dated marriage: on 8 July 1551, the only daughter and heir of Maximiliaan van Egmont-Buren and Willem van Oranje-Nassau were married there. The centuries-old, listed town hall stands on the market square. Since 1988, it has housed Museum Buren & Oranje. Koninklijk Weeshuis was founded by a deed of endowment dated 26 May 1612. These three places represent different historical points of reference: a wedding, a town hall that houses a museum, and the founding of the Weeshuis.
Walking routes and gardens through the seasons
Plantsoen park was laid out in 1860 as a new walking park on the former castle grounds and the remains of the old defensive ramparts. For a walk with a stated distance, consider the “Historisch Buren” route: it is 3 km long, takes about an hour and follows paved surfaces. The guided historical walk “Historische stadswandeling met gids” takes you through the fortified town of Buren and Plantsoen park. When choosing between them, you can take different points of reference into account: the “Historisch Buren” route has a stated distance, approximate duration and surface; the guided walk passes through the town and park.
The orchards around Buren bloom white and pink in April; in June and July, they are full of cherries and plums. The approximately 1,800 m² “Radiant” flower garden offers a different garden experience, with fruit trees, shrubs, perennials, roses and peonies. De Toeren standard orchard contains various apple and pear varieties and has been maintained by volunteers since 2014. These green spaces therefore differ in character, from a walking park on historic grounds to a flower garden and an orchard with apple and pear varieties.
Mill and artisan produce
Prins van Oranje is a round stone smock mill in Buren. Built in 1716 as a grain mill, it replaced an earlier post mill on the same site. The mill shop sells freshly milled flour and other artisan treats. Group visits outside regular opening hours can be arranged by prior agreement. If you are planning a group visit, take this arrangement into account when making your plans.
