Haule: Hiking, Nature and Village History
Accommodation in Haule
Hiking trails, nature and memorial sites offer different starting points for planning a trip to Haule. Alongside longer routes, there is a walking path through a variety of landscape features. Village history, art and the village festival also add their own distinctive touches. Haule can thus be explored through both its routes and its natural and cultural attractions.
Hiking routes and trails around Haule
The Stellingenpad is 260 kilometres long and divided into 15 stages; in Friesland, the route passes through Haule, among other places. Haule is also on the Groot Frieslandpad (LAW 14), a long-distance hiking trail about 350 kilometres long. The route details highlight different aspects: the Stellingenpad has a stated number of stages and total length, while the Groot Frieslandpad has an approximate total length. Haule is also on the Southeast Friesland hiking trail junction network.
A walking path in Haule runs from the car park by the ice-skating rink on Dorpsstraat, over the rink’s embankment and through a small wood behind it, which has a pingo pond, towards Blauwe Bos. As trail conditions can change, it is best to check them before setting out.
A cycling route also passes through Haule: the Fietsroute Langs Donkerbroek goes through the hamlet of Bovenveld. Haule is a ribbon village with a nature area on either side. A second Hein Mader art route is designated as a themed leisure route. It is 55 kilometres long and designed so that the start and finish are in the same place.
Nature and landscape
Blauwe Bos lies between Haulerwijk, Haule and Waskemeer. It provides shelter for animals such as roe deer, edge-dwelling birds and amphibians. At the end of Veenpettenweg is a grazing area where Natuurmonumenten is working to restore nature so that meadow birds can nest there again. The walking path, with its pingo pond, and the grazing area show different aspects of the landscape: a route through a small wood and efforts to create a habitat for meadow birds.
Village history, art and memorial sites
Haule’s present-day Protestant church was consecrated on 18 November 1855. The oldest grave in the churchyard belongs to Trijntje Hendriks Beetsma. Another distinctive feature of the village is the artwork “Beeld Hein Mader Haule”: it consists of two steel halves with a stone wedged between them, and stands on the village street that runs through Haule.
Haule’s war memorial is a natural stone memorial with two bronze plaques. It commemorates five residents of Haule and an Allied pilot who died as a result of acts of war during the Second World War or the colonial war in Indonesia, in the former Dutch East Indies. For a visit focused on history, the church, churchyard, artwork and memorial each offer an opportunity to learn about the village’s past.
Village festival and seasonal outdoor pool
Haule’s village festival takes place once every five years. It includes a parade and a celebration in a festival tent. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance. Nearby in Haulerwijk, Haulewelle outdoor pool opened for the new swimming season on 18 April 2026. As its operating season may vary, check the current opening dates before visiting.
