Specific themes for a trip to Oldeberkoop include the protected village center, the Bonifatiuskerk, art and hiking activities, cycling routes, and the surrounding landscape. These differ in duration, season, and type of activity. When looking for a hotel in Oldeberkoop, it may help to first choose the focus of your stay: local history, art, hiking, cycling, or the surrounding landscape.

Local history around the Bonifatiuskerk

The historic center of Oldeberkoop around the church is listed as a protected village setting among the Rijksmonumenten. Together with its cemetery and the surrounding wall, the Bonifatiuskerk is a Rijksmonument. The oldest parts of the church were probably completed around 1125. The village setting and the individual monument each have a different focus: one concerns the center around the church, while the other comprises the church, cemetery, and surrounding wall.

Hiking, art, and cycling

A walking tour of the village takes about an hour. This differs from the hiking routes offered by Stichting Promotie Oldeberkoop, which are about 9 to 25 kilometers long. They start and end at the Snoesje goat opposite the Bonifatiuskerk in the center. Individual route details may be updated; check the route you want before planning.

At the Berkoper Wandeldag, held annually on the fourth Sunday in June, hiking routes of 10, 15, 30, or 40 kilometers are available. Route options may change from one edition to the next. For planning, it is therefore useful to distinguish between the roughly one-hour village walk, the longer hiking routes, and the routes offered during the annual hiking day.

The Parkbossen art route is a village walk that passes monuments and historic buildings and leads through the park woodlands. It brings together their English landscape design with history and works of art. The annual Kijkroute Open Stal lasts four weeks and displays art at various indoor and outdoor locations in the village during July and August. The Open Stal art route presents works by various artists at more than 20 indoor and outdoor locations; the number may vary slightly from one edition to the next. The specific event dates also differ by edition.

For cycling, eight bike routes with different distances and destinations are available at the tourist information point in Oldeberkoop. As local availability may change, check what is currently offered when making specific plans.

The surrounding landscape

The Delleboersterheide lies along the Oldeberkoop–Makkinga road and is easily accessible from the road. It comprises a 195-hectare stream-valley landscape managed by It Fryske Gea. East of Oldeberkoop lies the Stuttebosch, where a meander of the Lende has been excavated again. The two places therefore represent different landscape features: a stream valley and a re-excavated river meander.

Arriving by boat and Passantenhaven De Uutwiek

Located on the Turfroute, Passantenhaven De Uutwiek makes it possible to reach Oldeberkoop by boat. It is open from May 16 to September 15; check whether this seasonal period works for your travel dates. The harbor has space for about 20 boats. The berths have lighting and shore power; there is also a station for wastewater and bilge water, as well as a drinking-water tap. If you plan to use any of these facilities, check their current status before your trip.

Cheese-making at Kaasboerderij de Stelp

At Kaasboerderij de Stelp, the van der Gun family has been making traditional farm cheese from the milk of their own cows since 2000. Production includes up to 14 varieties, including plain, fenugreek, nettle, pesto, and Friese nagel. The selection may change.
