Surhuizum offers several points of interest for a stay: the village character is shaped by farms and other houses, along with a church, sculpture, cycling route, annual festival week and a landscape area. This lets you decide in advance whether you are mainly interested in architectural heritage, a cycling trip, an event date or the landscape.

Village Character and Architectural Forms

Surhuizum’s settlement pattern is shaped by a line of farms and other houses along It Noard, Doarpstrjitte, It Súd and Koartwâld. This linear arrangement is as distinctive as individual buildings: it draws attention to the succession of farms and houses, not just to individual sights. Those interested in village character will find a clear framework here, in which the church and other houses can be understood as individual architectural forms.

The Doarpstsjerke in Surhuizum is the Hervormde Antoniuskerk. Its partly freestanding tower, with a masonry spire, stands in an enclosed churchyard. The sculpture De Balkenspringer stands next to the church. Together, they bring two cultural features into view: the church’s architectural description is shaped by its tower, spire and churchyard, while De Balkenspringer stands beside it as an independent sculpture.

Another architectural detail is the recently restored house at Koartwâld 11. It has a gabled roof between gables, as well as chimneys with plaques. The features can be compared by where they appear: the church is characterized by its tower and churchyard, the house by its roof shape and chimneys. Thus, alongside the settlement pattern, specific details of individual buildings also take centre stage.

Cycling Route and Festival Week

The Poëzieroute Achtkarspelen is a circular cycling route of just over 60 kilometres that passes through Surhuizum. Frisian poems are displayed on information boards along the route. Its length gives you a concrete idea of the circuit’s extent; the boards add a literary dimension to the cycling experience. The route is therefore defined both by its layout and its cultural theme.

A festival week, the feestweek, takes place in Surhuizum every August. It includes a world championship in seineharjen, the sharpening of a scythe. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, August is the time to note. The competition is a specific part of the festival and sets this event focus apart from the Poëzieroute and its poetry boards.

Landscape and Potential Habitats

The Surhuzumermieden covers 242 hectares and is suitable for developing wet hay meadows and grasslands for meadow birds, as well as herb- and fauna-rich grasslands on the higher parts. The distinction between terrain and habitat types gives the landscape a focus of its own: in the built-up village, houses and architectural forms take centre stage; here, the development of different grassland types does. Together with the area’s size, this offers another clearly distinct aspect of Surhuizum to consider when planning your trip.
