You can get to know Achtkarspelen through its landscape as well as its museums and historic buildings. The municipality lies in the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden National Landscape. Largely intact wooded banks and alder hedgerows shape its character, and signposted walking and cycling routes lead through this hedgerow landscape. When planning your stay, you can combine nature experiences and cultural attractions, although each is explored in its own way.

Landscape of Hedgerows, Wetlands and Gardens

In Achtkarspelen, north of the Rijksweg, you’ll find a hedgerow landscape with the well-known dykswâlen and several pingos. South of the Rijksweg, in low-lying land, there is a more or less marshy area with distinctive bird and plant life. These contrasting landscapes offer nature lovers different starting points when choosing their excursions.

De Kruidhof brings together botanical diversity across just under four hectares: its collection includes 2,000 plant species spread across 19 themed gardens, and is one of the largest botanical collections of medicinal herbs in Western Europe. At the Eettuin, you can enjoy fresh, local and organic produce; many ingredients come from the garden itself. Dishes and ingredients may change, so it’s a good idea to check the current offering before your visit. The garden also has a nature-inspired playground.

The Twijzelermieden also offer a close-up look at the landscape and wildlife. The 13.3-kilometre route passes through extensive grasslands, a hedgerow landscape and reed beds, with opportunities for birdwatching along the way. Bootsma’s Poel offers a different experience: the Laarzenpad trail leads through a partly marshy area, and Bootsma’s Poel itself is a centuries-old pingo lake dating back to the last ice age.

Choosing Walking and Cycling Routes

The Kerspelpaad can be explored on foot or by bike. It leads through the wooded landscape of the Friese Wouden in the municipality of Achtkarspelen, passing alder hedgerows, wooded banks, narrow paths and old farm tracks. If you’re looking for a shorter route, Surhuisterveen has a 3.4-kilometre walk through part of the town centre, passing local shops and sights. The longer walking route through and around Surhuisterveen is 13.7 kilometres long and starts and ends in the town.

For a flexible choice of starting point, consider the Streekpad Noardlike Fryske Wâlden: you can begin your walk anywhere along the 165-kilometre trail. Its marker is red and yellow. Signposted walking and cycling routes also lead through Achtkarspelen’s hedgerow landscape. The different route lengths and landscapes make it possible to choose a tour to suit your available time and interests, without treating one route as equivalent to another.

Another option is the Buitenpost cultural and historical walking route, which can start at the IJstijdenmuseum or at TOP Buitenpost, a little farther away. The Streekpad can also be started wherever you like, while the route through the Surhuisterveen area has a specified starting point. Before setting out, check the relevant details and conditions for your chosen tour.

Local Museums and History

The open-air museum De Spitkeet in Harkema shows how people lived and worked in the heathlands of Friesland and Groningen from 1850 to 1950. It includes historic buildings that visitors can explore inside and out. The exhibition also illustrates the transition from living in sod huts to simple brick houses. The open-air museum has a rest stop for walkers and cyclists, as well as a Toeristisch Overstappunt.

The IJstijdenmuseum in Buitenpost tells the story of the last two ice ages and their role in shaping the landscape of the northern Netherlands and Northeast Fryslân. Visitors can explore how people hunted and lived in prehistoric times. The museum can be visited independently; guided tours for groups and schools are available on request. As arrangements for visits may change, check the current conditions before you arrive.

The Museumboerderij Ot en Sien houses the complete collection of 22 school wall charts drawn by Cornelis Jetses. Its historic interiors include an old general store, a classroom, a doctor’s surgery, a sickroom, a living room, a kitchen, a workers’ house and a chapel. The focus here is on the variety of spaces in which people once lived their daily lives, while the IJstijdenmuseum covers the history of the landscape and prehistoric times.

In Buitenpost, the Mariakerk brings together several historic building phases: it is a Gothic hall church with a west tower; the lower part of the tower dates from the 12th century, and the nave from the 15th century. The Simke Kloostermanhûs in Twijzel dates from 1876 and is a Rijksmonument. The Oudheidkamer there can be visited by appointment. It’s also a good idea to arrange your visit in advance.

Koartwâld / Feanstermoune is an octagonal smock windmill built in 1864. It was officially put back into operation on 30 September 1995. It is open to the public on Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm and by appointment. As opening times and arrangements are important for planning, check the latest visitor information before you arrive.

Events and Local Culture

The Concours-Hippique in Buitenpost takes place annually during the Paardensportweek; dates vary. Each year, Stichting Survival Kootstertille organizes a survival run in the area around Kootstertille. Rondje Kunst Achtkarspelen is organized in collaboration with artists and gallery owners. Visitors can reach the exhibitions by car or bike via scenic country roads; dates and participating venues vary.

A gondelvaart op wielen, or float parade on wheels, takes place every September in Achtkarspelen’s oldest village. The floats are decorated with thousands of flowers. It’s worth checking event dates before your trip. This means the permanent landscape and cultural attractions complement offerings that can only be visited on specific event dates.
