Roderwolde: Mill, Wetland and Hiking Routes
Accommodation in Roderwolde
Roderwolde brings together several themes to consider when planning a stay: the Woldzigt oil and grain mill, church and local history, and hiking trails through woodland and wetlands.
Woodland, Wetlands and Hiking Routes
De Kleibosch near Roderwolde is a very wet woodland on the edge of the Peizerdiep valley. Remains of old clay pits can be seen along its winding paths. The woodland also has a geological feature: pottery clay lies at the surface there, which is why De Kleibosch is considered a provincial geological monument. The visible traces of the clay pits and the distinctive soil give the area its own character.
There is an unmarked 5.5-kilometre route for a walk in De Kleibosch. If you choose this route, take the lack of signposting into account when planning. The Knapzakroute Roderwolde-Foxwolde (K24), described as a longer hiking route, is 15.5 kilometres long. The route lengths can be compared directly: the Knapzakroute is exactly 10 kilometres longer.
De Onlanden, a wetland with grassland, marshes, small marsh woodlands and waterways, extends north of Roderwolde. The second part of the Groeningenpad also leads through De Onlanden: there, the trail runs alongside reed beds and natural play areas. This describes that section of the trail; it is not associated with a stage or section number. This allows you to choose between woodland with visible clay pits, a longer hiking route and a trail through wetland scenery.
Mill and Churches in Roderwolde
The Woldzigt oil and grain mill was built in 1852. A demonstration of oil pressing takes place there on the first Saturday of every month. If you want to plan your stay around the demonstration, check the specific date before travelling. The history of the mill and its recurring demonstration offer two different points of interest: the building’s history and the activity regularly shown at the mill.
The churches also offer a range of historical details. The new Reformed church in Roderwolde was built in 1831 at Hoofdstraat 25. Material from the demolished old church was used for its tower and façade. The Jacobskerk Roderwolde also contains a 15th-century baptismal font. The two churches therefore highlight different aspects: the construction date and reuse of older materials at the new Reformed church, and the historic baptismal font at the Jacobskerk.
Open-Air Theatre in Late August
The Openluchtspel in Roderwolde is an open-air theatre event held every year in late August. If this event is a key factor in your trip, plan around the specific performance dates. The annual timing provides a general guide, but you should still check the dates for your trip. Unlike a hike or a visit to the mill, the open-air play is therefore a time-specific reason to choose when to stay.
Plan Your Stay and Find a Hotel
When looking for a hotel in Roderwolde, you can first decide which of these themes will shape your trip. For De Kleibosch and the hiking trails, the different route lengths and landscapes matter; for the mill or the Openluchtspel, the relevant date is an important planning consideration. The church architecture and baptismal font add specific historical details to the local history. Use these interests as a starting point for planning your trip, then look for a hotel that suits your own travel dates.
