Zweeloo offers a range of reasons to stay: art and history are part of the village’s character, while hiking and cycling routes let you explore the surrounding area in different ways. For your planning, it’s worth comparing the cultural sights first, followed by route lengths and trail conditions.

Artists’ Village, Church and Outdoor Art

Zweeloo is an artists’ village with many galleries and studios. Saxon farmhouses also shape the village’s character; you’ll find particularly many noteworthy farms on Marktstraat, Kruisstraat and Klooster Street. Together with Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen and Wezup, Zweeloo forms the “Kunstenaarsdorp Zweeloo”. The five villages are members of Euroart, the European Federation of Artists’ Colonies.

An important landmark in the village’s history is the Hervormde Kerk van Zweeloo. The 13th-century church was sketched by Vincent van Gogh in 1883 and is a Rijksmonument. Its furnishings include a pulpit dating from 1702 and a bell from the 13th century. You’ll find further connections to art on Hoofdstraat and in the surrounding villages: the BuitenExpositie comprises 20 panels in total, displaying reproductions of paintings outdoors on the characteristic village greens of Aalden, Benneveld, Meppen, Wezup and Zweeloo.

An archaeological find is also part of the village’s history: the so-called tomb of the Princess of Zweeloo was excavated, and the objects found inside included foreign jewellery. If you’d like to get creative yourself, “Vincents Atelier” offers a choice of ten workshops using different techniques and materials. The workshops are led by local artists. Dates and registration details may change.

Compare Hiking and Cycling Options

There are several hikes of different lengths to choose from. The Van Gogh route “Symfonie van kleur” is eight kilometres long and passes through Oud-Aalden and Zweeloo. It starts at Hoofdstraat 15, 7851 AA Zweeloo, and is marked along the way with brown-and-white signposts. There’s a route guide and information panels along the route. The DichterBij Zweeloo walking route passes through Zweeloo and Aalden and is six kilometres long. Comparing the stated distances is a simple way to find a shorter or longer hike; trail markings may change.

The De Stroeten stream valley lies between the arable fields of Zweeloo and Benneveld. Orchids bloom there in spring. An unmarked 5.5-kilometre walking trail leads through the valley. So if the route marking matters to you, the options differ in more than just length: signposts are described for “Symfonie van kleur”, while the path through De Stroeten is unmarked.

The DichterBij Zweeloo cycling route passes through Zweeloo, Aalden, Meppen and Wezup and is about 21 kilometres long. Information panels at its junctions provide additional details about the surrounding area. The BrinkenExpositie cycling route offers another way to explore the area’s culture and leads to the 13th-century church in Zweeloo. The workshop of blacksmith Masselink is a landmark on the Kulturpad Coevorden between Zweeloo and Wezup. Check the latest route details and signage when planning your trip.
