Discover Oosterhesselen: De Klencke and cultural heritage
Accommodation in Oosterhesselen
During a stay in Oosterhesselen, you can focus on architectural history, archaeological heritage or route planning. De Klencke is a culturally and historically significant ensemble; the church and the Hunnenkerkhof reflect different historical periods. The routes also vary in terms of tour type and landscape. In particular, you should distinguish between the similarly named De Klencke routes by looking at their respective paths and activities.
De Klencke: Ensemble and architecture
De Klencke is a rare, exceptionally well-preserved and complete ensemble of great cultural and historical significance. It includes the manor house, farms, a stream valley, woods, fields and heathland. The ensemble therefore comprises not only the historic estate, but also farmsteads and various landscape features. This combination makes De Klencke a cultural attraction in its own right: architectural history and cultural landscape go hand in hand here.
A specific architectural detail can be found at the entrance to the manor house. It is designed in the Louis XV style and features a richly decorated fanlight. This lets you focus on the design of the entrance, while the ensemble as a whole provides the broader cultural and historical context.
Church and archaeological heritage
The Hervormde Kerk Oosterhesselen dates back to the second half of the 15th century. The Hunnenkerkhof on Grevenbergsweg in Oosterhesselen, by contrast, is an Iron Age burial site. The focus is therefore on two clearly distinct historical periods: the church’s medieval origins and an Iron Age burial ground.
The Hunnenkerkhof is a five-minute bike ride south of Oosterhesselen. Two large burial mounds and fifty smaller cremation mounds are visible there. Conditions on site may change, so check for current information about the visible features before visiting.
The Hervormde Gemeente te Oosterhesselen normally holds a church service every Sunday at 10:00 a.m. If this time is important for planning your trip, check the schedule in advance. De Kerk van Hesseln can be used for concerts.
Distinguishing routes by landscape and tour type
The Knapzakroute Oosterhesselen-Zweeloo follows narrow paths across the heath and beautiful avenues through the woods of De Klencke. The long De Klencke walking route also passes through woods and heathland, but adds pastureland to these landscapes. Both routes mention woods and heathland; the Knapzakroute highlights paths and avenues, while the long walking route also includes pastureland.
The Hoevenroute on the De Klencke estate passes all the farms and follows the estate. Its focus is therefore on the farmsteads and the estate, rather than the scenery described for the other routes. The Klenckeroute is different: it is a 52-kilometre cycling tour that starts at Havezate De Klencke at bicycle junction 71. The similar name can easily cause confusion; the key difference is that this is a cycling tour, while the long De Klencke route is a walking route.
