For your trip planning, Wachtum offers several distinct points of interest: landscape features, historic buildings, a memorial and routes that pass through the village. De Hoop Mill, the characteristic farmhouses and the Esdorp’s distinctive location each represent different aspects of the village’s history and surroundings.

Village and landscape

Wachtum is an Esdorp on the edge of the Drostendiep stream valley. Several esches lie around the village. Near the Westereind and the Olde Hoek there is also a small triangular brink. These features give the landscape a distinct shape: the valley forms the edge of the settlement, while the esches and brink are further features in the village’s surroundings.

The characteristic farmhouses from the second half of the 19th century are also part of Wachtum’s character. They add a historic architectural dimension to the description of the settlement and landscape. If you are interested in village history, the farmhouses and the mill’s history offer different points of reference for understanding the village’s development.

De Hoop and local history

De Hoop Mill stands on the edge of Wachtum and at the edge of the Zuideresch. In 1894, it was rebuilt there as a grain mill, having previously served as a polder mill near Veendam. The year marks its rebuilding in Wachtum; the mill’s history also includes its earlier function near Veendam. This makes it possible to distinguish the stages of its history by time and place.

Volunteers ensure that De Hoop can be put into operation regularly. Alongside its datable construction history, volunteer involvement is therefore part of how the mill is understood today. This does not imply a specific frequency: volunteers make it possible for the mill to operate regularly.

Another way to explore the village’s history is the resistance memorial in Wachtum. It commemorates resistance fighter Carel Otterman, who died at Buchenwald concentration camp on 25 February 1945. The name and precise date anchor the remembrance of a specific person’s fate in the village’s history.

Routes and winter activities

The Cultuurpad Coevorden: Holsloot–Dalen passes through Wachtum and offers wide views across the fields. Its description thus combines the route with a specific impression of the landscape. The 61-kilometre Randje Drenthe Route 5 Coevorden also passes through Wachtum. The route’s total length is a useful planning detail; the Cultuurpad description focuses on its route through Wachtum and the expansive field views.

You can go ice skating at the Natuurijsbaan Wachtum when there is sufficient frost. This is a seasonal opportunity that depends on the weather and cannot be planned for every travel date. If ice skating is important to your stay, check in advance whether the necessary frost conditions are present. This keeps the activity tied to the stated requirement.
