Mozambique offers a range of starting points for planning a trip: island and marine landscapes, savannas and floodplains, wildlife watching, and cultural heritage. These contrasts are especially vivid in the national parks and on Ilha de Moçambique. First consider whether nature, wildlife, island history or cultural traditions should shape your stay.

Islands and Cultural Heritage

Quirimbas National Park is located in Cabo Delgado Province. Established in 2002, it covers around 7,500 km² of land and sea. The Quirimbas Archipelago comprises 27 islands, 11 of which are part of the national park. These figures therefore refer to two different scopes: the number of islands in the archipelago and the number included in the park. This distinction is useful when interpreting the names of the archipelago and the protected area.

Another island region is Bazaruto Archipelago National Park. Established in 1971, it comprises five islands: Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina and Bangué. The island names make clear which places are part of this national park. Together with the stated land and sea area of Quirimbas Park, they show that Mozambique’s island settings are not limited to a single island group.

Ilha de Moçambique combines a distinctive geographical setting with architectural heritage. It is a limestone coral reef in the Indian Ocean at the entrance to Mossuril Bay in Nampula Province. Its heritage includes defensive structures and numerous religious buildings, many of which date from the 16th century. If you are interested in history and religious architecture, the island offers a different focus from the national parks and their habitats and wildlife.

Savannas, Lagoons and Wildlife

Limpopo National Park is located in Massingor District in Gaza Province and was established in 2001 in collaboration between the government and the Peace Parks Foundation. Its landscape includes sandy plains, mopane savannas, wooded savannas and floodplains. Animals living there include elephants, rhinos and buffalo. The combination of different landscape types and large mammals offers a distinct nature-focused option when choosing a destination.

At the Chingute, Piti and Maundo lagoons in Maputo National Park, visitors can observe numerous bird species as well as hippopotamuses and Nile crocodiles. The three named lagoons give wildlife watching a specific geographical focus. Maputo National Park is also part of the transboundary Libombos Conservation Area, which extends across Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland. The park therefore combines opportunities for local wildlife watching with a protected area that spans several countries.

Chimanimani National Park brings together several interests: Mount Binga, at around 2,436 metres, is the highest point in Mozambique. The park also has a wide variety of plants as well as endemic bird, reptile and butterfly species. Activities include hiking, climbing, horse riding, photo safaris, canoeing, historical and cultural tourism, and birdwatching. Check locally how these activities are arranged. Several road connections link the area with the north, centre and south of Mozambique, as well as with Zimbabwe.

Limpopo National Park also has a dedicated range of activities for guests staying overnight in the park: you can enjoy canoeing, guided tours and fishing there. If you plan to take part in any of these activities, it is best to check locally what will be available during your stay. In Chimanimani National Park, cave paintings add a cultural dimension to the landscape and natural history.

Traditions and Choosing the Right Focus

Activities at Banhine National Park include walking trails, safaris, canoeing and cultural tourism. Cultural experiences include traditional fishing, rainmaking ceremonies and oral storytelling traditions. Sacred sites preserved by local communities can also be visited. If you would like to plan such encounters, ask in advance about the options available locally.

These places offer different focuses to help you choose: the lagoons in Maputo National Park provide named locations for wildlife watching, while Limpopo National Park is associated with savannas, floodplains and large mammals. Chimanimani is known for its plant and species diversity, Mount Binga and a range of activities. Ilha de Moçambique draws attention to religious and defensive buildings; Banhine to traditions and sacred sites preserved by local communities. These differences can help you first choose the right destination for your hotel stay in Mozambique.
