Mozambique’s Nampula Province offers several themes for a trip: the history of Mozambique Island, coastal landscapes and mountains. Mozambique Island is a limestone coral reef in the Indian Ocean, four kilometres off the mainland coast at the entrance to Mossuril Bay. Together with the small, uninhabited islands of Goa and Sena to the east, it forms an archipelago. This means the island and the province’s other landscapes sit side by side within the destination.

Mozambique Island: History and Architecture

A bridge built in the 1960s connects Mozambique Island to the mainland. On the island is a stone and limestone town that was the seat of the Portuguese colonial government from 1507 to 1898. The capital was later moved to Lourenço Marques, now Maputo. The town’s historical role gives the island a distinct focus within the province.

The architectural unity of Mozambique Island stems from the continuous use of the same building techniques, materials and design principles. This is evident not only in individual buildings, but also in a recurring architectural style. The island has numerous religious buildings, including many dating from the 16th century; its heritage also includes defensive structures. The town’s colonial history is therefore complemented by religious buildings, defensive architecture and a shared approach to construction.

Coast and Mountains: Different Travel Interests

There are dive sites off the coast of Nacala; the outer reefs have coral walls at depths of 10 to 25 metres. Chocas Mar offers a different experience: its beach stretches for several kilometres and has fine white sand and warm, shallow water. The calm, shallow waters are suitable for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. The coastal attractions therefore differ, with dive sites and coral walls at Nacala on the one hand, and a beach, shallow water and water activities at Chocas Mar on the other.

The highlands provide another focus in the wider Nampula travel area. Mount Namuli is considered a sacred mountain by the Lomwé and is associated with challenging treks. Cultural significance and trekking come together here, while the water activities at Chocas Mar offer a different focus. The Nairuco Mountains also have hiking trails. When planning your trip, you can therefore consider coastal waters and water sports separately from mountain landscapes and trails.

Traditional fishing is also part of the region’s coastal character: it is associated with the Primeiras and Segundas Islands archipelago in the Angoche and Moma area. This adds another cultural aspect of the province to its water and landscape themes.

Choose a Focus for Your Stay

If you’re looking for a hotel for your trip, it’s best to decide on your focus first: will island history guide your choice, would you like to explore coastal and underwater landscapes, or are you more interested in mountains and hiking trails? These options differ in theme, not in ranking. This makes it easy to plan your time in Nampula around the interests that matter to you.
