Katse: Garden, village and views

Katse Botanical Garden is in the village of Katse and covers 17 hectares. It is home to a diverse range of birdlife, as well as medicinal, ornamental and useful plants. Birds and several groups of plants represent different aspects of this botanical attraction. If you are considering Thaba-Tseka as a destination for a hotel stay, you can consider whether nature and plant life suit your travel interests.

Katse Village was developed in the early 1990s and offers beautiful views of the Katse Reservoir and Lesotho’s rugged mountain landscape. The views of the water and mountain terrain offer a different focus from the garden’s birdlife and plants. You can therefore weigh up the local attractions according to your interests: the garden brings together botanical and animal diversity, while Katse Village offers a scenic attraction with the reservoir and mountain landscape.

Lesotho as a wider travel destination

When planning your trip to Lesotho, it is worth considering the country’s diverse natural attractions. At 3,482 metres, Thabana Ntlenyana is Lesotho’s highest geographical point. In Sehlabathebe National Park, you can fish for trout in the Tsoelikana River; on the same river, a waterfall plunges over a low cliff into a natural swimming pool. Fishing and the waterfall are two different natural attractions along this river.

Access to Sehlabathebe National Park is also relevant to your planning: all access roads are unpaved and require high-clearance vehicles; four-wheel drive is recommended. As road conditions can change, check them again before your trip.

The season shapes other landscape experiences in Lesotho. On the upper slopes of Ts’ehlanyane National Park, rare, heath-like mountain fynbos grows alongside aloes, irises and other flowering plants, which bloom especially profusely in spring. In Bokong Nature Reserve, Lepaqoa Falls plunge over a 60-metre-high cliff and often freeze into a column of ice in winter; how often this happens depends on conditions.

For a longer hike, a 32-kilometre route lasting two to three days leads from Bokong Nature Reserve to Ts’ehlanyane National Park across an alpine plateau sometimes called the Roof of Africa. Check current conditions locally before planning the route. Seasonal plants, falls that often freeze in winter, and this multi-day hike offer different ways to include Lesotho’s nature in your travel plans.
