Discover Lesotho
Accommodation in Lesotho
At 3,482 metres, Thabana Ntlenyana is Lesotho’s highest geographical point. Katse Village offers a different perspective on the landscape, with views of the Katse Reservoir and Lesotho’s rugged mountain scenery. These present two distinct natural features side by side: a single geographical high point and views of water and mountains. This distinction can help you organise the landscape highlights of your trip to Lesotho.
Mountain landscapes through the seasons
Rare, heather-like mountain fynbos grows on the upper slopes of Ts’ehlanyane National Park. The plants include aloes, irises and other flowering species that bloom especially profusely in spring. In Bokong Nature Reserve, the Lepaqoa Falls plunge over a 60-metre-high cliff and often freeze into a column of ice in winter. This gives you two distinct seasonal natural features: especially abundant blooms in spring and a winter scene of ice, which depends on the conditions at the time. If you want to plan your travel dates around one of these experiences, spring is relevant for the flowers; the falls freezing over, however, remains a frequent possibility, not a guarantee.
River scenery and a multi-day hike
In Sehlabathebe National Park, you can fish for trout in the Tsoelikana River. The river also has a waterfall that plunges over a low cliff into a natural swimming pool. Here, you’ll find two distinct ways to experience nature: trout fishing as an activity, and the waterfall and pool as landscape features. The hike, for which Bokong Nature Reserve is the starting point, requires a different time commitment. The 32-kilometre route takes two to three days to reach Ts’ehlanyane National Park and crosses an alpine plateau sometimes called the “Roof of Africa”. It is therefore a separate multi-day part of a trip. Check the current conditions locally before planning this hike.
Plan your route and hotel search
All access roads to Sehlabathebe National Park are unpaved and require vehicles with high ground clearance; four-wheel drive is recommended. As road conditions can change, check them again before setting out. If you’re including this national park in your trip, getting there is one practical consideration alongside deciding which landscapes or activities interest you. When searching for a hotel in Lesotho, it helps to consider your planned stops and the route there together.
A culinary tradition
The cuisine offers another focus for your trip. Lesotho’s villages serve the traditional porridge Motoho. This dish adds a culinary tradition to the ideas for landscapes and activities. For travellers who don’t plan their trips solely around landscapes and activities, it offers an additional perspective on Lesotho.
