Velo Veronese: Karst, Trails and History
Accommodation in Velo Veronese
Karst landscapes, historic trails and traces of different eras give Velo Veronese several distinct highlights. The destinations described range from a staircase trail about 500 metres long to the CAI route, which is around 37.4 kilometres long. There are also caves, archaeological remains and local traditions. You can organise these themes for your stay according to what you would like to explore more closely.
Karst Landscapes and Caves
The Covoli di Velo Veronese are classified as a designated nature reserve within the Lessinia Regional Natural Park. The Covolo di Camposilvano is considered the largest karst cave in the Venetian Pre-Alps. It served as a refuge at least 50,000 to 70,000 years ago and was also used in Roman times as a natural place to store food. Its geological significance and long history of use are part of the same place.
Velo Veronese is described as a balcony overlooking the Veronese Plain. Monte Purga also brings landscape and history together: the mountain is home to the remains of a prehistoric hillfort and a Roman fortification. If you would like to connect these traces with a specific trail, the historic Sentiero No. 253, “La Via Cara,” is an option. For much of its length, it follows the upper section of the old Via Cara transhumance route, which once connected the plain with the pastures of the Conca dei Pà rpari.
Choose Trails by Route and Theme
The Legend Run route starts in the square in Velo Veronese, leads to the summit of Monte Purga and is fully signposted. CAI Route No. 252, “Dorsale bassa della Lessinia,” offers a different scale: it runs from the Museo di Bolca via Velo Veronese towards Ponte di Veja and is about 37.4 kilometres long. Its route passes through forests, meadows and the contrade from Bolca towards Peri; Velo Veronese lies along the way.
For a shorter walk, the staircase trail to the Covolo Amphitheatre, about 500 metres long, is another option described here. It starts at the Museo Geopaleontologico di Camposilvano. From the amphitheatre’s viewing balcony, you can see the cave entrance. The stated route lengths differ considerably: the staircase trail is about 500 metres long, while the CAI route is around 37.4 kilometres.
An MTB route also crosses the high pastures of Lessinia. The tour “In mtb da Camposilvano alle steli di confine con il Regno del Tirolo” passes through Velo Veronese, Roverè Veronese and Bosco Chiesanuova, and leads to stone boundary markers between the former Republic of Venice and the Kingdom of Tyrol. Conditions on the Legend Run route, CAI Route No. 252, the staircase trail to the Covolo Amphitheatre and the MTB route can vary seasonally; check conditions before setting out.
Museums and Local History
The Museo Geopaleontologico di Camposilvano displays fossils from Lessinia and beyond. The exhibition traces the development of life across different geological eras, beginning with an extensive ammonite collection. The finds on display include the remains of marine reptiles and dinosaur tracks. You can also see the complete skeleton of a cave bear, which stands more than three metres tall when upright.
The Cimbrian history of the area extends beyond individual attractions: Velo Veronese was once the capital of the 13 Cimbrian municipalities. The route “Velo Veronese – I tesori di Azzarino” passes through Azzarino, a former Cimbrian municipality. Its contrade, stone markers, sundials and frescoes preserve local stories. Another tale is associated with the Valle delle Sfingi: according to local tradition, the mushroom-shaped rock there is connected with an ogre and the fairy-like beings known as “fade.”
The Monumento ai Caduti di Velo Veronese, a memorial to those who fell in the First World War, is part of the area’s more recent historical memory. It was inaugurated on 18 June 1922. The Festa del Monte Purga is considered a traditional local festival. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the announced dates.
