Sommacampagna: History, Routes and Slow Food Market
Accommodation in Sommacampagna
If you’re looking for a hotel in Sommacampagna, a few specific themes can shape your trip planning: the town’s history, Villa Venier, memorial sites in the nearby area and a regularly held Slow Food market. Further afield in the region, there is also a signposted cycle route. This gives you a choice of different interests, from historic sites in Sommacampagna to routes in the surrounding area.
Villas, Churches and Local History
Villa Venier, also known as “La Bassa”, is a 17th-century patrician palace with an Italian garden. The town’s history stretches back further: Sommacampagna’s first houses were built around the Pieve di Sant’Andrea at the beginning of the feudal period. The Pieve was probably an important point of reference for the Verona countryside and the lower moraine area, as well as a spiritual centre of intensive economic activity.
Another historic landmark is the Chiesa di San Rocco. It was built in 1511 on the ruins of a medieval castle on Sommacampagna hill. The villa, Pieve and church thus point to different aspects of history: a patrician palace with a garden, the town’s early development, and a church building with a medieval predecessor. The Santuario di Madonna del Monte is also culturally significant: it is officially recognised as a place of cultural interest and importance to the local community.
Routes and Memorial Sites Nearby
The Sentiero della Pace runs nearby, 1.8 km north of Sommacampagna, along the road from the sports facilities uphill to the historic Madonna del Monte sanctuary. This describes the route’s location north of the town. Further afield in the region is the Anello cicloturistico Terre del Custoza, a different route: this circular cycling route is about 65 km long and fully signposted with tourist cycle-route markers. The two details therefore offer different kinds of orientation: the Sentiero’s location relative to Sommacampagna, and the Anello’s approximate total length.
The Ossario di Custoza is also nearby. It houses human remains from the battlefields of the First Italian War of Independence, fought from 23 to 25 July 1848, and the Third Italian War of Independence, fought on 24 June 1866. The battles took place at Custoza and in neighbouring municipalities. It also houses smaller quantities of remains from the Second Italian War of Independence, from the battles at Solferino and San Martino on 24 June 1859.
The exhibition rooms at the Ossario are in the former caretaker’s house. They opened in 2018 and cover the battle of 24 June 1866 and the history of the Ossario. The focus here is therefore both on the events of the Wars of Independence and on the history of the memorial site.
Market Visit and Trip Planning
The Mercato della Terra Slow Food takes place on the first and third Sunday of each month from 09:00 to 13:00 in Piazza della Repubblica. This food event brings together more than 40 small-scale farmers, producers and food artisans from the province of Verona and neighbouring provinces, selected by Slow Food. The market offers a chance to meet and talk directly with the producers. There is also an area in the Piazza’s gardens where you can sample the products you have bought.
If you want to plan your visit around the market, schedule your trip for the first or third Sunday and the 09:00 to 13:00 time slot. This is a different kind of orientation from the route information: for the market, the relevant details are a specific day of the week and a time slot; for the Sentiero, it is the location north of the town; and for the Anello, the approximate length of the cycling loop. You can take these differences into account when choosing a hotel and planning your stay.
