Sanguinetto: Castle, Churches and the Rofioi Tradition
Accommodation in Sanguinetto
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Sanguinetto, historic buildings, sacred art and the Rofioi tradition can be the main themes guiding your choice of destination. The town brings together a centrally located castle, churches from different centuries and an annual festival tradition. It is also set in a completely flat landscape, typical of the Po Valley.
The Castle and Its History
The castle stands in the heart of the town and was built in the 14th century on the orders of the Scaliger family. The square complex has sides measuring approximately 55 metres. This approximate measurement adds a sense of the castle’s scale to its historical context: alongside its association with the Scaliger period, there is a specific geometric form. The castle dates from considerably earlier than the parish churches of San Giorgio Martire and Santa Maria Regina in Venera, which were completed later.
Churches and Frescoes
The first church in Sanguinetto was built in 1145 as a chapel dependent on Casaleone. The parish church of San Giorgio Martire was completed in 1835, based on a design by Giovanni Canella, an architect from Verona. The present-day parish church of Santa Maria Regina in Venera was completed in 1959 and consecrated in 2001. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between completion and consecration: for Santa Maria, the two dates refer to different events.
The frescoes in San Giorgio combine a clearly countable series with several narrative scenes. Gaetano Miolato painted 14 Stations of the Cross, as well as scenes of the Last Supper, the multiplication of the loaves and the martyrdom of Saint George. Alongside the Stations of the Cross, these are other specific themes, ranging from biblical events to the depiction of the saint after whom the church is named.
The Oratorio delle Tre Vie
The Oratorio delle Tre Vie adds a distinctive form of Marian devotion to the area’s sacred art. It was completed in 1747. A 17th-century image of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in a niche, flanked by Francis of Assisi and another saint. The Oratorio is used especially for Marian devotion, including the rosary in May and the celebration of the “11 Masses” on a single day in July. As devotional schedules may change, check the dates before your trip if you plan to attend one of these events.
Rofioi and Festival Tradition
The Antica Sagra dei Rofioi offers a specific seasonal attraction. It normally takes place on the second Sunday in September and features food stalls, dance evenings, and the tasting and sale of traditional Rofioi. This pastry from Sanguinetto is made with puff pastry and filled with almonds, amaretti, rum and biscuits. If you are planning a trip around the Sagra, check the dates for the relevant year.
Landscape and Local Craftsmanship
The area around Sanguinetto is completely flat and typical of the Po Valley. The local economy includes family-run businesses in the period furniture sector as well as highly specialised restoration workshops. The town’s profile therefore encompasses furniture-making and restoration alongside its historical and religious themes.
